Gilbert

A bit of a update.
Gilbert is running lovely.
3 wheels are weeping oil, inside brake drums, checked axle breathers and ok. Maybe seal. Not sure if BritPart or Bearmach.
Investigating needed.
Slight weep from bell housing. Darker oil suggests rear Engine main seal. Maybe the rubber T seals fitted.
Any Ideas please
The temp gauge and fuel gauge goes up and down. Could this be a voltage regulator problem ????
Mornings when first starting, Gilberts fuel gauge will shows true fuel level, but after a while begins to drop.
Seems to related to how the Temp Gauge sits. If temp gauge rises 1.4 inch, fuel gauge rises about the same.

Went for a run up the Border Ranges, to Tweed Look out. Not a planned trip, so didnt get to our destination, as was worried about fuel levels.
Gilbert ran up in third and second, without any problems. Descending used first and second, instead of working the brakes.
Filling up at Mt Burrell, still had 10 ltrs Left. Getting An average of no more than 15ltrs per 100klms (sometimes 12 to 13) around the Tweeds Up and down roads, on 98
An Enjoyable day. Head up and do the loop to Kyogle and back to Murwillumbah soon.

Oil leaks are normal, unless your brakes are getting soaked I wouldn’t worry. Wipe them up and enjoy. With 3 Land Rovers and a Jag in my driveway it’s a wonder the EPA don’t turn up at my place after it rains looking for the person who’s dumped all the oil down the drain... 😇

If both gauges are moving up and down together it is certainly a voltage regulation problem, but not necessarily the voltage regulator itself - more likely the earthing of the regulator, or earthing between the bulkhead and the chassis or engine and chassis.

I have several good earths. And each one has cleaned back to Bare metal before fixing.
Engine to chassis/ Battery Neg. Gearbox to Chassis. Bulhead to chassis.
The new loom, which attaches to the Gauges earth, attaches to the main battery earth.
I was wondering if I could test the fuel and temp at the source in any way ????
What should happen as the temp sensor heats up ???? Ohms change ????
Have to check the top of the fuel tanks, as fuel seems to weep out when parked on slope, so can I test the Fuel sender ????
I have new sender gasket and new cork one for the pick up pipe.
Any fuel safe sealant I could smear it with. Have Black Gasket paper and can make new ones, or fuel safe rubber maybe.

Did you replace the voltage regulator behind the dash?
There are ic ones available
I got one from Eb.. and it worked like a charm

You must have got it right Shane, 15 litres per hundred, or almost 19 miles per gallon, is good for a series 2.25 engine, most are consistent around 15 miles per gallon (20/100), especially given that you live in undulating terrain.
As for the oil leaks, well after all it's British, they have part numbers ;)

Hi Mick, 15 is top end. Think I can get 12/13 depending on foot. 70 Klms, gentle throttle.
Nav Man show speed at 89 Klms, on the flat, no tail wind, just over half throttle and nice and quiet, without overdrive fitted.

Short wheelbase should be able to do 20-25mpg and lwb 18-20 if driven reasonably. With this engine, overdrive is not very useful - unless there has been a lot of effort put into soundproofing and door and window seals, the engine noise should be well below wind, tyre and gear noise. ANd this engine is quite happy to run at the rpm needed for any speed attainable.

If you keep at or below 50mph (80kph) the fuel economy will be much better.
