That is non-standard.

Agree with John.
It looks like the space where the front of the fuel tank should go.
The standard tank has a taller section that sits inside the seat box and a shallow section under the floor on the drivers side.
I think your photo is of the latter space.
Standard tank is 60l from memory. if my assumptions are correct yours will be substantially less.
My '74 S3 had twin tanks and the second (left hand) tank that is similar to yours.
It held 45l from memory
Phil.
Fuel tank would be my first guess. BUT I have heard of people having batteries under the footwell....
Series 2/2a and early 3 had 45 litre tanks, like yours. Later Series 3 had the larger tank described by Phil - I wonder if what you are seeing is the result of a larger tank being replaced by a smaller one?

I will see how much fuel goes in, next time I fill the Tank.
Breaking News,
Gilbert moved under his own ' steam ' forward/backward in the front yard. :D
Flushed clutch, putting new fluid through the system. Now He has a clutch !!!! Lots of black crap and water flushed out.
Changed the colour from blue to yellow. Nice yellow fluid appearing after quite a few pumps of the clutch.
Same went for the Brake Fluid.
Found all gears smoothly, 4 plus Reverse, Hi/Lo plus overdrive.
Gilbert didn't move in gear, Lo 1st. OD in neutral, once engaged all good.
With the OD, do I have normal drive, neutral ( middle ) OD drive with the three positions of the lever ???
Will now check front/rear diff oil plus gearbox and transfer box. Dipstick, or level plug on gear/transfer box ????
OD box is full and the oil looks nice and clean.
What oil do you use in these ( EP90 ) which brand ???? is it all the same ???? easy if it is.
Thanks for your replies.

As John said, EP90, but you'll find EP75W90, EP80W90 or similar which is a bit thinner when cold but does the same job.
Try and get a GL4 spec. oil.
GL5 uses a different high pressure additives and some can cause problems with bronze bearings. The blender I buy from claims his GL5 is OK but still then supplies me with GL4.

Dropped the front windscreen, to find this.
My first thoughts were, 'doesn't look too bad '

Hi,
Undoing Gilberts, rear hard top bolts ( 4, one in each corner, through the soft top, hoop holding tubes ) I noticed they are double ended, threaded bolts, with large round washers, with 2 nuts, one on each end.
Is this how they were originally, or were they just a bolt, and something else has been put in.
Thanks
