I just had a look at the perentie diff ive got in bits and it doesnt have the shims so i may be wrong about it. All the holden banjos and salisbury's ive rebuilt over the years had them. Maybe JDNSW might know.

The 'shims' behind the side gears are actually thrust washers. According to the Series 2a and Series 3 parts and workshop manuals, a selection of three different thrust washers were available to adjust free play on Series 2a, but there are no thrust washers on the Series 3 diffs, and excess play means renewing the matched set of four gears and possibly the differential housing.
I think the theory is that unless the oil is contaminated or missing, the differential gears only move very slowly relative to each other, and so there should be minimal wear. More accurate manufacture and supplying matched sets of gears meant that selective fitting of shims or thrust washers was no longer necessary.
Thanks for all the replies.
So what is suggested for the play in my gears ?
Find replacement, or try and shim up. Any other shims that may fit ????
I was thinking yesterday, when we restore our Land Rovers we discover these small and large problem, yet all these other running , used, unrestored 50 yr old vehicle, running without to many problems, but may still have the same, undiscovered, clearances inside.
Also is it easy to pull apart and reassemble.
Have put the collars on the stub axles and painted, also the brake backing plate. Hubs nearly finished.
Just the Diff gears problem to solve.
Thanks again.

wonder if these thrust washers would fit ????

Your link didn't work for me (took me to their site but not the shims) but I found the diff shims.
Those shims look like some I've seen fitted, they are fibre and perforated. I picked up a diff a while ago and one of the shims had split and fallen out.

Four Wheel Drives have them listed in their old catalogue at .040", .045" and .050" The LR parts manual shows them as 533786, 533787 and 533788 with a part number they can easily be found.....
Land Rover diff thrust washer 533786
533786 - Thrust Washer for Diff .040 Inch
Hopefully this is the part you are after.
Colin
Thanks Colin.
Only Fri morning in the UK, so be sent this week. [thumbsupbig]
Used John Richards before. Very happy with the service and help in the past.
Can also get some other smaller, a lot cheaper than Au bits.
Do you think the 40 thou is enough.
DingoCroft have the 50 thou, 533788 in stock. Maybe get a couple of these also.
The smaller gears have 10 thou and 8 thou.
The 60 thou side, was the one with chewed stub axle and new axle shaft. ????
will try and measure again, both larger cog clearances.
whitehillbilly
well, out measuring things.
smaller cogs, both 10 thou.
Looking at larger cogs, then noticed something !!!!
Bit of digging with fine screw driver, and fine long nose pliers.
I got this [smilebigeye]
Think I need to order the 50 thou, as the bits taken out measured 45 thou.
Thanks
whitehillbilly
Ordered the thrust washers today.John Richards only had 40 thou. Ordered some other small, cheap compared to AUS prices.
DingoCroft is suppling the 50 thou shims, and 5 Crown wheel locking Tabs, as I believe I have to pull thing apart, to get the Thrust washers in, and will replace tabs.
The 50 thou shims will give me 13 thou clearance.
Now to pull down diff. I will mark positions of gear on gear with 'whiteout' pen. also position of locking ring, and count the number of turns to pull it off. Special tool, or ????
What torque on the crown gear bolts and bearing carrier bolts.
Any other advice please. Will read my manuals, to try and get a better idea of strip down process.
Thanks

Hi Colin,
Not made to last. [biggrin]
Maybe 40 yrs old !!!!!! is the problem.
Change the Honda Rear Tyre at the end of last year. 'Will it last 40 yrs, like the old one'........
What, was the reply. Old one did 40 yrs. The were in dis belief.
Work on the rear diff and hubs today.
The diff nuts were all shapes , sizes, some with nyloc's
I got new ones, not nylocs but lock old style, Pressed in sides, cant remember what you call them. Now they all match.
Did find 88 in yellow crayon on the diff, when I cleaned it up, so maybe a replacement at some time.
