    Good Evening
Was off South of me to visit a mate with S3 games and to show off Gilbert.
Passing through a small village on the way, noticed a smallish man pushing a wheel barrow, and knowing who lived on the other side of the road,
Pulled over. Barry I asked, yes was the reply. A man I have been meaning to visit for some time now, but my first encounter.
'She should run a little better than that' was his next comment, bit retarded and the carby needs a little tune up.
Nice job on your 77 SWB S3. I popped the bonnet which now has the front wheel fitted.
Need a 7/16 ringy, was Barrys next comment. I have one in the back, was my reply, and a small screw driver and 1/8 WW ringy. Ok have one of those also.
I made up a smallish tool kit and use it to work on Gilbert, adding any extras needed, so pretty complete.
Barry Marshall, was the series Land Rove Guru, here before selling the business only repairing Series Land Rovers, mainly owned by local Banana growers, 10 odd years ago, and probably not a local Land Rover over the last 50 odd years he hasn't worked on.
    Wasnt uncome for Landy Owners
10 minutes on the dissy and carby, Righty Ho, jump in and drive it past me a couple of times. Thats better, but still needs a bit more, and I need a drive. Always drove then after fiddling. Heading out tonite, can you come back next week. Yes I can, was my reply.
The improvement was amazing, and I thought Gilbert was running good. How wrong I was.
Headed South again with a big grin on my face.

Love having the Canvas rolled up.
Bit of an update on Gilbert.
Running really well, after a Barry tune up.
Went to visit another local to me with a S1. I dont think I have syncro in first or second.
A quick drive and he confirmed it.
Will pull off top cover Tuesay afternoon and have a look.
Thinking I didnt put enough oil on the New syncro cones, for SyncroGearboxes and has locked up.
Anyone have any other Ideas, and what to look at please.
    Good going up to 4th.
Very hard 3rd to 2nd, timing and revs to slot it in, but easier to 1st, but still not what I expected, with the full Syncro box.

    Thanks.

    Good morning.
Had the center section of the exhaust pipes welded up. No more popping on slowing down.
Pulling the top off the gearbox today. Have this feeling I put the syncro cones in dry.
fingers crossed, the just need releasing and oiling.

    S3 Gearbox

    Good evening.
Pulled the top cover off the Gearbox and examined what I could see.
    Nothing looked out of order.
I compared a complete S3 box with the cover off, and another complete mainshaft, with Gilberts.
I really cant see any thing causing the problem going down from 3rd to 2nd.
New syncro cones ok, engages very easy 1st and 2nd, with small screw driver.
Put everything back together and same problem.
So what should I look at, or do the new parts need to wear into the old ones.
Goes in at 20klms with out doubling the clutch. Goes up Ok, taking revs up a bit before changing.
Just a case of running it in ????
Is it possible to mix syncro with non syncro gearboxes. 901 prefix, but will check
    Thanks.

Machined flywheel, new clutch and pressure plate.
Are you suggesting then peddle may need more travel ?
    Thanks.

possibly too much free play on the master cylinder actuator
it is adjustable inside the pedal box cover
they are also a PITA to bleed. It could be air.

Clutch takes up, with the peddle an inch off the floor.

IMO there is too much free play on the MC
Could also be air on the system though

    Good Evening
Putting a Few klms on Gilberts New motor and gearbox rebuild.
    Running real nice, But
today noticed he ran on a little, a couple of times, when turning the key off.
I changed from non ethanol 98 to non E 91. does the timing need changing a little or is it something else ????
Next tank full back to 98, and see if i get a few more klms to the Tank.
Getting close to 18 to 20 miles per Gal on the 91, general running, around the hills and valleys, where I live.
When I had my Mitsy Challenger, I save $10 per Tank running 98 over 95
    Thanks for your replies.
