Probably a good thing, the less landy bits on it , the more reliable it will be LOL . I bought a Navara PS box for the PW but it turns the wrong bloody way , Just waiting on a Toyota box, apparently they work , I also got an Astra Electric pump to play with , they are all the go , apparently the Ford and Commodore hoons are fitting Power steering pump delete kits and using Astra pumps.

Yes, the Astra pump is the TRW unit - the same as I fitted to the 101 - works brilliantly and I didn’t have to worry about an engine mounted pump which I didn’t have room for. It does take around 5 to 10 seconds to reach full pressure after the engines started though and sounds like a jet winding up (but much quieter)

The Patrol PS box turns the opposite way to the Navara unit if you can find one of those - I originally looked at the Patrol box but didn’t work for me, and was told by the Nissan Wrecker the D22 box was reversed - which it was and worked - cheaper too.

I very nearly went the electric pump route on my FC build as the belt powered power steering pump on the isuzu clashed with the chassis. But the 30-50amp current draw swayed me away. With this, a decent thermo fan, plus lights etc, I was going to need a serious alternator upgrade. I ended up modifying the bracket to make the OEM pump work.

Was very tempting though. Even so I could spool it up to test the power steering system. Where as I'll now have to wait months until I get the engine running....

they are not constant 30-50Amp , only when on demand like parking etc . More like 5 Amps when driving .

I’m only running a 50 amp alternator with no dramas. Current draw most of the time is as GB said - between 5 and 10 amps and ramps up depending on how the steering is being used. I got a max current draw of just under 35 amps at full lock on mine, with around 20 on start up until pressure is raised so overall nothing to worry about.

Very handy to be able to turn the wheels without the engine running too.

What fluid are you running in your conversion with the Astra Pump?

I bought a new steering box for the PowerWagon from USA & plan to use the Astra Pump , but I better stick with the correct fluid for the pump, Google says Penrite LDAS ???

BTW , this steering box would go well in place of a Landy Series box in the original position , if you want to keep the relay box. You can take the mounting plate off & make one to suit the Landy Mount. It has the correct rotation for a RHD Series. It takes a Toyota / Navara pitman arm.

Dextron III is approved as per the TRW manual I thought so that’s what I used. If that’s not correct I’ll need to change it, but that is an easy job and it’s done almost no work with the fluid in it.
