Thread: Lights On No One In (reverse switch)

Hello from Brisbane.

The switch should be on the back of the plate that the gear lever assembly is secured to the top of the gearbox. It is on mine anyway. If it isn't there, check to see if there is at least a threaded hole where it may have been.

It may be a naive question, but is the gearbox in your truck actually the original all synchro one that came with it new? Ring ins from earlier models predating reversing lights are not entirely out of the question - especially for some folks who prefer the older box.

As suggested by SIIIUte the switch is fitted into the back RHS of the gear lever assembly. You'll need to remove the tunnel cover to get at it.

The switch is the same as the switch on the brake pedal box on a 6cyl and is either plastic or brass housing. There was almost the exact same switch on Holden Commodore, so replacements are readily available.

Very early SIII didn't have reversing lamps and sometimes the gear stick assembly was replaced with one off a SIIa.

If you don't have one on the assembly, get a switch and drill and tap an appropriate hole in line with the reverse selector (the RHS shaft) and screw in the switch so that the button depresses sufficiently to close the contacts when the selector moves to the rear.

You can use the same technique to fit reverse lights to earlier Landies.

Someone has definitely been under the gear lever assembly before as half of its missing!


Re the pic - do you mean the face where the two bolts are pointing or somewhere else?

The switch should fitted just about here in the rear vertical face of the gearstick mounting bracket.

The yellow line is the alignment of the switch, at the front end you can see where the switch has been hitting the back of the selector.

Hello again.

The plate that Lots-a-Landies and I were referring to is missing in your photo.



If you look closely at the gear lever assembly in the photo above you can see the switch coming from the back of the plate at the base of the gear lever assembly and is located on the RHS - that way when the lever shifts across to the left and up to engage reverse the selector rod on the far right contacts the activating pin on the switch.

Thanks for your time and the photo's which are very helpful.
I'll have a look tomorrow to see whether there was a hole there. The lights are there at the back , the wires to them were snipped. All very interesting.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Here we go.


One hole and its threaded so all looks good.


I'll get on the net for a switch and the other missing bits and then will work out how to wire it all up.
