    Series III Panel Arrangement and Registration

    Hello Series III Owners,

    How do the vehicle registration authorities react to changes in the configuration of panels in Series III vehicles; providing there are no changes in the number of seats?

    For example, changing a custom side ute body to a flat tray body?
    Or converting a custom side tub by fitting sides and a full roof?

    I have a range of spare parts so I could easily swap bits and pieces around and I just wondered what the authorities would make of it?

    Do the Series III Stage 1 Land Rovers have the same adaptability regarding the ability to change panel configuration?

    It will be a new registration, the reality the only important thing for the authorities is that the number of seats matches the number of passengers on the compliance plate. Each seat having approved seat belts and anchorages.

    As for the body fitted, (with the exception of station wagons) the chassis number/VIN only identifies a wheelbase and engine. So as long as you use the various panels with their matching fittings everything should be O.K.

    Thank you for the reply. Thinking about your answer I suppose the only thing that really changes between a tray back and a custom side ute is the positioning of the rear light cluster - reverse brake and tail lights.

    This could be allowed by having a bayonet plug system clamped to the chassis so that the different sockets could be used. Most flat tray backs have the light cluster under the rear of the tray. While custom sides have lights mounted on the tub.

    Hi Lionel

    You will find that there are Lucas bullet connectors down near the chassis on either side. Or at least there were when the Landy was originally assembled.

    The bullets on the wires off the lamps were usually long enough to plug directly into these connectors
