series 3 109 1974 Light Switch / no tail lights

Can anyone enlighten me with regards to what terminal does what on the back of the light switch in the dash please? I have power to the brake lights but no tail lights.

I have from terminal 1 red and black wire to the panel light switch.

from 4 brown wire I think to the inspection sockets.

from 7 red wire to front side lamps.

from 8 blue wire to head lamp dip & flash.

I'm confused as I think there should be another red and black to the tail lights. There's red and black wire to the lamps at the back but cant see anything at the switch. Which terminal should it be on? The Haynes says it shares no.1 but I cant see the female connector to the panel light switch ever had a companion. If I go with a new cable , which terminal should I use or could I just crimp a new length into the female connector for the panel light switch and what's the usual method of getting it to the back. I'm assuming it would be suicidal to attempt to thread it through the chassis? Hope this makes sense.
All help gratefully received as usual.
    cheers,
    D

According to my diagram (1979 Military GS and FFR), there is a red wire running from terminal 7 on the switch to an inline fuse, this isnt the fuses on the under side of the steering column. Although on the civilian vehicle it is likely that the inline fuse is replaced with one of the fuses under the steering column, probably No 3 (terminals 6 and 7)

From the lamp side of the fuse the wires branch into Red for the front and red/black stripe for the tail lamps.

Have you also checked the connections downstream from the fuse to the rear?

To summarise connections on the back of the switch on Mil SIII:
    1. No connection (on Civilian vehicles without blackout this may also be the red/white stripe to the panel lamp switch)
    2. No connection
    3. No connection
    4. Brown wire +ve from IGN switch, parrallel to (Red terminal) inspection lamp sockets.
    5. No connection
    6. No connection
    7. Red wire to inline fuse for side/tail lamps
    8. Blue wire to headlamp dip switch.

I just had a look at a 77 Military SIII, there is no fuse in the lighting circuit.

The rear lamps are Red/black stripe and come off terminal 1 on the light switch.

You may find that the panel lamps are paired on terminal 1 or possibly on terminal 2, use a test pencil to see if it closes in parrallel to the tail lamps.

    thanks for this.

There's no terminal on no.2 its just blank - no lug at all.

I'd have thought that the wires for the tail lamps would share the same terminal as the wires for the side lamps at the front - but what do I know!

I'll try the test pencil idea.

You could always pair both the tail lamps and panel lamp feed off terminal one.

Thinking about it, my 1978 SIII FFR recently melted it's light switch and when I replaced it the tail and panel are off terminal one using the red crimp below. However my wiring isn't original as the previous owner removed the blackout switch.

Appreciated and thanks for the pics.

I'll take both off terminal 1 as that is what the circuit diagram says in the Haynes. Maybe , both side lamps , tail lamps and number plate light is too much draw for one lug?
