Thread: Cold Start Warning Light 74 109

Yep, it's the choke. The switch is mounted to the back go the choke assembly in the engine bay - on a series 2 anyway, not sure of the differences in the series 3.

Here's what the series 2 one looks like - it is the little silver lucas switch just over the RHS of the middle, and below centre of this pic. The choke cable runs just above it.

Babicat, I'm assuming that's your Landy. Am I also correct in assuming you only get an engine bay that looks like that if you pull everything apart, strip everything back to bare metal, and spray paint the various bits?

Just trying to get a feel for what I'm facing. Yours is bloody impressive though I doubt even the base metal will allow me to achieve a similar result (and no, I'm not going to bog an engine bay).

I think that on a series 3 the switch for the light is actually on the cable itself in the engine bay. It is on my 78 Game and it is just a warning that the choke is on.

Not mine unfortunately, but Grey Ghosts - I've been giving him a hand with the wiring, yes, a full nut and bolt tear down was required to get to this point. I am doing a series 3 myself at the moment which will hopefully be of similar quality when finished.

In a nutshell GG has spent nearly 3 years of hard graft to get it to this standard. Keep an eye on the thread as with a bit of luck, it may be running next weekend...

Thanks Gents - I'll take a look once the fog clears - I cant see 3 feet in front of me! I'm interested as to what the thermostat is in this circuit - I'm guessing its not the same as the thermostat above the water pump. But If I find the switch I should be able to follow the wires (hopefully , as a lot of it has been chopped about).

On a 74 RRC, the light only comes on when the temp is ABOVE a certain temperature.IE the light is to warn you to turn the choke off.

They have a triangular shaped sensor with a blade connector, which only grounds when the temp is up.

On an RRC there is a microswitch attached to the cable just behind the knob.
I would think that the 109 would use the same system, but with LR you never know.
It took me a while to work out the logic of it.LOL

That's interesting Mate - I thought pulling the choke on its own activated the light - but I saw mention of the thermostat which confused me. I'll go take a look at it now the fogs cleared and see what I can see.

I think I have found the switch - it has Brycrest stamped on it which appears to have been a parts manufacturer in UK. I have two circuit diagrams, one shows the switch for cold start thermostat + the switch for the warning light, the other just shows the latter. I cant find any mention of it in the workshop manual or parts manual or the usual suspect parts suppliers. The switch looks as though it wants to be clamped to a pipe maybe? to pick up some heat? Is that how it works? But cant think of any heat source in the vicinity. I might put a hairdryer on it tomorrow and see if it does anything.
