    Chassis for 300tdi swap

    Hello All,

During my idle moments when I am practising avoidance from my studies - hmmm like now ... I escape into Land Rover Land. After reading through Debruiser's SWB thread of putting a 200tdi into his vehicle, I wondered something.

    (Debruiser's Thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/members-ri...ml#post2171788)

Between the choice of a 109 chassis with a 4 cylinder motor petrol or diesel, contrasted to a 109 chassis with an original 6 cylinder petrol motor - which would be the best configuration for transplanting a 300tdi into a 109 Series III?

I have read through a couple of conversions a while ago. However, I cannot recall if they were a 4 cylinder motor or a 6 cylinder motor chassis. I have access to both options - so which one is the best choice?

The gearbox would be kept original - if that has some input into the decision.

The mention of a 300tdi is because the 200tdi is getting a bit outmoded and less available these days. Even more so by the time I come to have the cash on hand to do the work!

Call it being in research mode for a future project. That sounds so much better than saying "day-dreaming" Oh well back to the university studies

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

I did some research on this before buying the 200tdi.... if memory serves the 300tdi has the same engine mounts so the 4 cyl chassis would be easier to fit. BUT the 6cyl firewall would give you some more room to fit the engine, turbo and associated bits and bobs into the engine bay....

here is some interesting reading for you....

Like you said the 200tdi is getting pretty old and the 300tdi isn't that much behind it, so plenty of people have 'been there done that' and lots have posted about it online! Means people like you and I can just cheat!

I think the six cylinder chassis makes it easier if you are installing a 200tdi + LT77 gearbox, the 300tdi motor has the mounts set much further back than a 200tdi and I'm quite sure the injector pump will foul on the r/h chassis mount.
A defender 200tdi motor will not drop straight in either as the front timing casing will also clash with the r/h chassis mount.

The easiest option which I have found out the hard way is to use a Discovery 200tdi motor and fit a defender 300 tdi manifold and turbo. This combination will sit directly onto the original chassis mounts and connect to the original gearbox. The turbo will not foul on the chassis and the manifold makes it easier to route the exhaust system. The series gearbox housing will need four holes drilling to mate up to the 200 tdi flywheel housing.

This is the combination I'm going to use in my Dormobile as I want to keep the chassis as original as possible.

    Hello Jerry,

Thanks for your reply and the extra information.

Did you start off with a 6 cylinder engine chassis or the 4 cylinder?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

I've dropped in a 200tdi disco engine with 200tdi defender turbo.... didn't cut or change any body/chassis bits. the dump pipe is very close to the LH footwell though.....
