Drove my old farm series for the first time in ages..

The battery terminals were crusty so it would not start and there was diesel all over the place as a seal had let go on the cav filter so she needed a little attention before we were going anywhere. Anyway 20 minutes later and the diesel leak was fixed and she was cranking again and she started up easily. I loaded her up with a couple of hundred kilos of lick for the cattle and started on the way to the back of my property. I wont be around for a few days so I needed to take more lick than normal hence needing my Landy, the quad bike is normally all I need for this job. Anyway bad points first, me and the missus did not talk much on the trip as it was pointless due to the noise of the old series diesel, actually that was not all bad . Good points, I had forgotten how much low down torque that old Landy engine had!!! You can select a gear on a really steep hill release the hand break and with no throttle at all she will start crawling forward when you release the clutch!!! The back of my property is quite rugged and washed out but the old Landy did it all with great ease. For what I use her for the old series diesel engine (actually a reconed unit) is perfect especially as we have diesel delivered. I just cant imagine having to use the old girl on the highway though, not without ear protection
Mechanically she is in very good order I might just spend a bit of time tidying her up when I get back, yes I just use it on the farm, but apart tatty door tops she would be good enough to register so she deserves a coat of paint.

what is she Mate a series 3? I use mine to go pick up wood from over the other side of a creek - mines a swb 3 - the slope either side of the creek is fairly steep and he'll crawl up it fully laden in low 1st with nothing on the gas. I see an article in CLR mag I think last month where the couple go on long trips and they wear headsets with mics where they can talk to each other!
    cheers,

Its a series 3, here are some pics, despite how it looks it is actually a lot better than it appears. The track rod ends have been done along with break master and slave cylinders, wheel bearings and those fiber cups replaced in the swivel balls. Hand brake done recently and the engine swapped from a petrol series (really good one actually) to a refurbed 2.25 diesel. The aftermarket canopy had had its day but with a bit of welding it could be fixed up.
The seats need recovering but a mate does that as his business so not a big issue. The dash needs help but it is only cosmetic, it also needs some indicator lenses, again no big issue. There is no play in the steering and surprisingly no oil leaks!!!
The wet oil on the engine is actually diesel from yesterdays leak, the leak is now fixed though. I did find when taking the pics a small hole under the steering box in the fire wall which is annoying, but it seems to be the only problem that might be annoying to fix.

I have had it about 6-7 years, when it needs something I always do more than needed, little by little mechanically it has become rather good. Apart the hole I need to weld in the fire wall which will be interesting and welding up the canopy the rest is just paint and a bit of tidying up. I do need to find some door tops though.
Sad to see it looking so tatty especially as it goes so well.

nice looking vehicle - I'm going to attempt to put mine back on the road one day, needs a lot more doing to it than yours - I'm gradually getting the bits I need + trying not to cannibalise it for the 109. In the meantime , he's earning his keep getting the firewood up to the house.
    cheers,
