    No Thermostat

Thought I'd take a look at the thermostat and temp sender + flush out the radiator on the 109 as nothing registers on the gauge and having popped the thermostat housing off - no thermostat there. I'm guessing why the engine takes a long time to warm up. Any ideas as to why you would not want a thermostat? I can only think that it failed and someone couldn't be bothered to replace it?
    cheers,

I think partly it is that the quickest way to get going if it fails is to take it out but also people seem to blame the thermostat for any overheating problem. The belief is that the system flows better if the thermostat is not there but in fact what happens is that the engine either doesn't warm up properly or it still overheats because the problem was actually the radiator or blocked passages in the engine anyway. The bypass is also always open if the thermostat is removed which can cause issues.

    Cheers,

It's almost a knee jerk response by poorly informed people. At the first sign of the temperature gauge going over the normal mark they heave the thermostat out. They have no concept of the extra wear and consumption this causes, and they don't care. Another common lurk is to tin snip the supports and just leave the outer ring, due to some misplaced thought of stopping the water from circulating too fast to cool. I used to frequently replace thermostats removed by owners because the LPG converter and heater circuit would get nothing at all and misfunction. Even a low temperature thermostat around 70C is better than none at all.
