You should be getting the fun summer motoring from the Moke.
I have had a series or defender v8 project in mind for some time and had even acquired a Discovery 1 v8 as a donor vehicle. Then this one came up for sale, it already has the required burble so the project is instantly fast-tracked.
It is 1980 Stage 1 which has had a 4.4l P76 transplant and gas installed around 25 years ago going by the gas compliance plate. The chassis appears good, straight and rust free but the same cannot be said for the bulkhead. Part of the deal was a series 3 109 parts car with a clean bulkhead, which will be swapped to this one in due course. The Stage 1 is registered which is a biggie in WA as it means avoiding a pit inspection.
It has a LT95 transmission but has had free-wheeling hubs installed. I scratch my head at that one as even with the hubs disengaged and the centre diff locked (so the rear wheels would drive), the front axle will still be spinning. I don't know if running like that would over load the centre diff? The LT95 is a bit noisy so will come out for some attention soon anyway. A spare transmission came with the car also.
The plan is to take the hard top off and install a soft canopy, even a bikini top for some fun summer motoring.
The wife is only just tolerating the new acquisitions. Such fun living life on the edge
Cheers
Chris

Looks like a good project.
Micks eagle eyes can spot a Moke at a thousand paces - I had to zoom into the pic and take a good look before I found it.![]()

A pic of "the fleet" during a major shed reorganisation today. Do you see a trend here with my vehicles? I seem to be attracted to yellow/orange cars????
Of course the D4 stayed inside the garage as it would not want to be seen with such riffraff. Maybe it would also feel a bit exposed being white
As far as progress, I have stripped my D1 parts car of its engine, transmission and axles for future projects if required. It is on the car trailer to go off to get squashed on Monday. :-( It didn't fit my vehicle profile anyway, its dark blue......
Cheers,
Chris

Mmmmmmm, looks like I have a problem.
A first check of oils etc has found that the pinion of the rear diff has got a couple of mm of free play which I assume means that a bearing is stuffed. Now I assume that it is not a simple matter of changing bearings insitu as the preload etc will all have to be reset, even if the free play has not totally stuffed the crownwheel etc.
I though that is easy, I'll just swap across the axle assembly from my donor 109 and all will be good, but then realised that the ratio will be different (3.5 vs 4.7).
Do I need the "special" tools to spread the housing to get the diff centre out? I presume the axle will have to come out and go to a specialist shop to fix this one??
Any advice???
Short answer, yes. See

for a decent description.
Somwhere I have seen a description of a way to make the required tool if you don't have it. I will see if I can find it. If I can I will post.
