In my experience the vast majority of Australian assembled Series Landrovers (1,2,3) came with spare wheel mounts on the bonnet, usually dealer installed. I have five bonnets here, all with spare mounts, except for one off a UK assembled 2a.Quote:

I hadn't thought about slinging it underneath or sticking a strap up over the bonnet onto the headboard behind the cab. That's given me food for thought. That's what I love about this Forum , all sorts of ideas that you might not necessarily think of yourself.
All my vehicles had bonnet mounted wheels when I acquired them and the fittings looked as old as the vehicles. When I took the forms in to get the ownership transferred I parked up on the forecourt of the local Police station which shares with Service Tas Office and got chatting with a couple of Officers. They didn't mention the wheel on the bonnet at all. This is Tasmania though!
With regards to lifting - I don't seem to be able to lift anything much above 20k without straining my guts or my lower back no matter how hard I try - I'll get it fixed sooner or later.

I have a '71 2a with the bonnet mount as originally delivered to the nsw police, I don't choose to carry my spare on the bonnet, but the bonnet mounted spare is legal and has been part of land rover for many years before mine.
my spare is mounted inside, gets in the way of the factory mounted side facing seat and takes up a lot of the minimal available space in a shorty.
my back door also has a spare wheel mount, but I do not use it as it interferes with the trailer hitch.
I am surprised that your bonnet doesn't have this mounting as standard, but I might have missed what year/model your car is.
Thank you for all that clarification. I feel pretty confident that I can get on and fit my bonnet mount kit without attracting undue negative attention from the police. Not that I don't already attract attention from the Police, (although typically not negative) but, with half of them in Perth being Poms, that is the nature of the car..Quote:

In my truck's case the wheel was originally internally mounted with no mounting kit on the bonnet. Because it is a SWB I moved onto an aftermarket swing-away carrier to make more room inside.
I did however fit a defender bonnet on my car, so even if I did originally have the dished series III bonnet I would have lost the brackets anyway. Given that my internal bulkhead has also been cut down and stiffened, I have also lost the internal mounting point anyway.
I was thinking of going for a Wolf Defender mounting style on the cage, but I am not sure how well WA DoT would take that...

The Series 3 Stage 1 had an option for a bonet mounted spare. They were around '81 - '82.
