Pretty certain it is an isolator for the second battery.

OK - so I'm guessing you have a switch on the dash somewhere that isolates the battery used for turning the engine over from the battery used for all the Camping stuff. I've not come across one of these before so I'm not sure how they are wired with regard to the starter solenoid etc . Let us know how you get on.

Looks to me like a "Surepower" Isolator for charging dual batteries from a single alternator. They were popular back in the 1980's. I still have one here in the shed, has yours been blue in colour originally? Voltage loss was a bit of issue with one I had, from 14.2 volts at the alternator it dropped back to 13.5 v after the isolator.
I ended up removing mine and making my own manual system that just used relays.

Also, another query:

It's currently got a 6cyl Holden 186, though I'm unsure if the original motor was 4cyl or 6cyl.

I've seen a number of accessories (soundproofing kits etc) which specifically say 4cyl only, eg: Land Rover Parts - Hardura Tunnel interior kit (4 cyl. models only)

Does anyone know the best way to identify if the body was originally 4cyl? Or what the different is sizing/fitting wise? As far as I'm aware the 6cyl has a slightly different bulkhead infront of the shifters?

The bulkhead is the major difference - easiest way is to compare yours with one with the original engine. In the four, the engine bulge in the bulkhead is just in front of the line joining the front of the door opening. In the six, it is about three inches further back.

The other way of telling is to put the chassis number into Calvin.

Great, poor photo, but from this, it looks to be like it's a 4cyl bulkhead then?
Edit: maybe not, could be 6cyl, doing more comparisons(!)

Perfect! thanks, looks like mine is 280-320mm depending on where you measure, pretty confident it's a 4cyl

Yup overdrive fitted, thanks for the pic..

Bit hard to tell from the picture's perspective, but I think it is a four. Run a string between the edge of the door pillars - if it clears the bulkhead it is a four.
