    Hub inner seals

    Hello from Brisbane.

A quick question concerning metal and leather inner hub seals.

I had read somewhere, possibly a UK site, that the original leather hub seals gave a better performance than the later neoprene type, especially if the lands are a bit worn.

The lands on my truck are ok but I did order in a set of the metal and leather seals from one of the UK suppliers who had listed them as NOS. When they arrived today they were in the infamous blue packets.....

So, before I fit them, has anyone had experience with these parts - good or bad? I also have a set of neoprene seals (which also came in blue packets) as an alternative.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Really annoying that they insist that they're allowed to sell their parts as OEM purely because they don't state which manufacturer...

Our local Series drive train expert over here in the West (one of those who trained under Land Rover in the 50's) don't rate the real Genuine or NOS parts though. OK for a stationary museum piece, but for a working and running vehicle he only fits Corteco Seals as that's the brand Land Rover apparently switched to when they worked out the leather seals weren't very good...

Pretty certain Statewide Bearing sells their products

    Hello again.

Just pulling up this relatively old post to make a follow up inquiry.

I got back on to this task the other day after many months of it sitting idle while work, travel etc got in the road.

Phoned Statewide Bearings here in Brisbane but they don't happen to stock or source Corteco seals. Apparently they can supply an alternative make but didn't elaborate on whether they were as good as the Corteco product - which my reading seems to confirm are very good, as your local Land Rover expert has suggested.

So, I made direct contact with the Australian distributors for Corteco, but was advised by one of the technical staff that no-one would stock the relevant seals locally and they would need to be ordered as a special manufacturing run from the parent company overseas. Three issues there - the minimum size of an order to warrant a run (I only need 4), the cost associated with that minimum size and a 9 month delivery delay were I still keen to pursue it. Needless to say it didn't progress beyond that.

I was wondering if your local contact might happen to have any in his stockpile or might know a source over there that I might chase up about a set for my Series 3?

    Cheers,

    Neil

I made a post the other day about this. Its in my s2a betsy rebuild thread . Im diong a disc conversion and it uses special hubs machined to s3 specs. I needed to get 4 hub seals. The britpart ones i had gotten in bearing kits were only single lip and i wanted double lip seals. Rtc 3710. So i got some from my local repco. Perfect fit on both surfaces and double lip as well. Ive added a pic of the seal part number and brand. I ordered them by size not which vehicle to fit them to coz when u say series land rover they dont even bother to look. I paid $5.00 each for these and repco usually have them in stock at their warehouse and u can usually get them within a day.

    Cheers Rod

The quality of these seals is great.
