    Transfer box drops into neutral

My C240 powered Series III has been back on the road for a while but I keep getting the same problem. Twice today the transfer box dropped into neutral.
Typically backing off the accelerator and braking it suddenly loses drive.

I have a new detent plunger & spring in transit with some other parts but wondered what else I could check before having to take things apart !

It has a high ratio transfer box so the transfer box has been machined, I wonder if it's possible that the machining wasn't that accurate and the shaft is misaligned ?

    G'day Colin,

Don't think its an alignment problem. However as a last resort you can use gear paste on the gears to see the contact pattern. The High speed gear on the main shaft has some end float but not enough to disengage the dog teeth.

I'm with you and also would have ordered new spring and plunger.

However, being some things Landrover the selector folk does move axially on the selector shaft before you tighten the fixing bolt. Maybe the fork is fully engaging the dog on the High speed gear but not allowing the plunger to fully lock the shaft.
    Just a few thoughts.

    Thanks Chris,
I was trying to remember how the selector was 'set up', I might have to re-visit this once I've tried the new spring & plunger.

I think there are two or three possibilities here, apart from the spring and plunger.

Firstly, something stopping full movement of the lever - for example the floor, due to possibly loose engine mounts of distorted floor panels, secondly the selector fork loose on the selector shaft or the nut on the front of the selector shaft loose, and thirdly, lack of preload on the output shaft bearings, allowing the shaft to move longitudinally. Could also be missing or badly worn thrust washer in front of the high gear or the circlip holding the front bearing come out.

    John,

First thing I checked was the floor in case it restricted movement, pre-load was OK when I rebuilt the box as to the other items you mentioned... I'll add them to the check list.

    Thanks,

New spring & plunger fitted today and a small adjustment on the selector fork position.

Seems to be OK but only had time for a short test run.
