Notwithstanding the thermals, t shirt , fleece, two hats, fingerless gloves and a coat - I've seized up! So it seems has the gearstick knob. I'm trying to remove the transmission tunnel cover to get the seat base out. I can just about turn the knob on the stick but it doesn't feel like its threaded on. Any ideas how to get it off or do I have to remove the whole stick? Thinking about it - I wonder if the replacement gaiter would slip over the knob? The existing one wouldn't. I might just give the existing one a nick to remove it.
cheers,

Thanks Neil -I nicked the gaiter. I'll go give it a tug and see, when I shake the hypothermia off!

Thanks again. I have warmed up sufficiently to make an attempt on it. I'll let you know how it goes.

p.s - no go. I was in mind of Newtons 3rd so I didn't give it the full monty - but I gave it a good heave and nothing. I'll revisit it when I dismantle it.

Thanks for that Whitehillbilly. That looks nasty. I reckon that'd be as hard to remove as all hell. Cheaper than putting a thread on it I suppose.

Hello Dark,
I had a gear stick snap off at a poorly welded repair where it comes out of the top of the swivel ball, great fun!
I had to move the gear knob across to the replacement lever, and I found that judicious tapping with a fist sized block of wood was sufficient to move the knob off and onto the lever.
Cheers, Cerise.
Were you on the road when the stick failed ? how did you cope? I had a go with a rubber mallet but no go. I nicked the gaiter to get it off the stick so I could pull the tunnel cover up and over. Thanks for the wood suggestion. I may have another go at it when I remove the stick and can get it in a vice. Maybe a bit of WD would help as well. I don't want to break the knob if I can help it.
cheers,
D

Well, we'd been away camping over christmas. We were on our way home (not far, fortunately) when a firm push into reverse caused the stick to separate from the swivel ball.
I had a spare gear lever at home, waiting to be replaced. I lifted the floor and tunnel, and removing the 4 bolts off the gearbox and bell housing allowed me to take the big u-shaped lump of steel that has the swivel housing attached, home.
A careful removal of the circlip, spring and special washers (none of them went 'ping' over the horizon, thank goodness), and that boxing day afternoon ended happily once I'd gone back out and reattached the stick to the landy and driven home.
The most memorable bit was the look on my daughter's face. She had passed her driving test just a few weeks before, and it was her first ever go at driving the Landy. 'Mortified' would be quite an understatement, even when I showed her the existing crack, and explained that it really wasn't her fault. She likes driving it now though.
