My 88" Series 3

Pulled the rear diff down after the work this evening. Few more parts to order unfortunately :( Bearings need changing, and the prop flange is quite badly worn where the seal runs.

Bit of odd damage to the carrier bearing, don't know if its from corrosion, or maybe electrical arcing?

All the crown wheel bolts were loose, and there was another broken one hiding. The others look to be necked down a bit from over-tightening.

Pinion bearing shells look ok, but quite dull, so they will get renewed.

The crownwheel and pinion teeth look fine. However, if the front diff is showing less wear I think I might promote this rear one to the front.

Got a bit of cleaning & sandblasting done this evening, I noticed some of the bolt holes on the outer swivel housing are a bit elongated. I don't recall the bolts on the stub axle being loose or otherwise "not right" when I undid them. I take it there is no problem with helicoiling the stretched threads? Or should I renew the part?

I would put that spot on the bearing as corrosion. Was it sitting for years at any time?

A helicoil should be fine - is it worth having the housing crack-tested?

I suppose you could use any thread type of helicoil in reality to repair these - I'm not sure how readily available BSF helicoils would be? Apart from the standard BSF bolts that Land Rover use, BSF bolts in general are getting quite hard to find outside of specialty suppliers.

I tried to but some BSF Helicoil's recently from Bolt Masters & was told they were not available.

"Powercoil" brand do a BSF kit apparently, I've got one on order.

I notice that only two of your four hub bearing sleeves are still fitted with the (press-fit) distance pieces. Did the other two come off without having to be split with a chisel? This is currently an issue I am having with the rebuilding my mine.

On the two which still have the distance pieces fitted you sand blasted the outer surface which needs to remain smooth for mating with the inner bearing rubber seal, so you are going to need to replace these.
