    Confused?

    Hello again from Surabaya.

Yes, I am now a bit confused.

Not wanting to seem like a dog with a bone, but having a spare moment between flights I looked up a few of my usual parts suppliers' sites and the front brake cylinders for 4's and 6's are listed as different part numbers. That bit would seem a bit odd if they are essentially the same.

My earlier vague understanding was that they had larger internal capacity to handle the bigger braking surface and general power of the vehicles.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Hi Mick,
this may help identify components for various models. It would certainly appear that you have rear 109 brakes on the front axle.

    Interchangeable

    Hello again from Surabaya.

Yes, as suggested a couple of times by others here your truck likely has had a set of 109" rear brakes fitted to the front axles.

The wheel cylinders are basically interchangeable between the two wheelbases (109" rear to 88" front same side, but not vice versa):

Land Rover Parts - BRAKE WHEEL CYL - (86"+88" SWB 1954-85 LH FRONT) & (109" LWB LH REAR S2A+3, for S2 three stud fixing, use 521543) (2 stud fixing)

    Cheers,

    Neil

Thanks Cookey, that shone some light on the issue for me.

Seems odd to mount rears on the front but thinking about it.......

Shorty is single leading shoe (SLS) all round, LWB is twin leading shoe front (TLS)

A TLS setup has limited braking when rolling backwards (no servo effect). So bigger SLS brakes give a bigger braking area (than the std. shorty brakes) when traveling forward and also more braking force when rolling backwards.

Was it used seriously offroad in it's past life ? Or maybe I'm overthinking things and it's just what was available at the time......

Colin, I have no real idea about much of it's past, only that the PO that I purchased it from had bought it unregistered, owned it for a couple of years, but never got around to putting it on the road. A folder with some photos and receipts came with it, and it looks like a fair bit was done to it in the late 80's. Prior to then it had the 2.25 and a standard gearbox.
It had 186 coupled to the cabstar box, so I can only assume it was considered a brake upgrade to go along with the engine upgrade. It has the 109 booster set up as well.

    Cheers, Mick.
