Series I, II & III use different size inner & outer bearings and one component (can't remember which one) was very expensive.
At 'mates rates' it came out at around $350 for the pair from SKF when I last enquired.
At the time I was paying about $35 per set from 4-Wheel Drives (aftermarket/no-name brand) but including lock washer, seal & gasket. I don't do enough kms in the oldies to be concerned too much about the brands.
My '56 Series I has the original Skefco bearings in 3 hubs and no-name in one. No-names were fitted to one hub because the bearings were pitted where water had got into the hub.

Yes the hub bearings are the same, not sure when exactly they changed.
I did have a set of pitted bearing somewhere, just so I'd got the part numbers but now of course I can't find them. Not sure if I wrote them down somewhere.
I think it was the outer track of one of the bearings was 'odd' so it was very expensive.
The no-names vary. Years back 4-Wheel Drives had them in rust preventative paper, 10 at a time. I asked for a set and two unwrapped bearings were put on the counter (never seen a bearing supplied like that). Bearmach/Britpart at least come wrapped & in a box. There is an etched number on the tracks but never a makers name !
So Britpart/Bearmach must get them made to order probably in India. So it then comes down to the material they use, the hardening, grinding process and the manufacturing tolerances......could be OK could be a POS.
Most, if not all, the big bearing brands manufacture in China and probably also India. The country of origin doesn't automatically determine the quality but it's nice to have the 'comfort' of a known brand name.

I picked some parts up for our Discovery from RoverParts and yes they were forced by Land Rover to change the name. So it's not just happening in the UK anymore. :mad:Quote:

Note that Series 3 wheel bearings changed Sept 1980 - later ones have same inner and outer bearing - but not the same as either of the earlier bearings. So, as with so many parts of a Landrover, make sure what you have before ordering!
