Series III 2.5 Litre Diesel Engine Gaskets & Other Goodies

    Hello All,

I have a 2.5 litre diesel that had already been taken out of a vehicle that I did not see. I was told it was a Series 3. How critical are things like Suffix Letters when ordering gasket kits for the engine? Is it one size fitted all?

Also, is the engine number located in a similar place on the 2.5 litre diesel as it is on the six cylinder 2.6 litre petrol motor?

A similar question about the clutch and pressure plate - if I buy a clutch kit for a Series 3 - 2.5 diesel do I need to be concerned about suffixes; or is it one size fits all?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

All LR's had changes throughout the models. Any reputable parts dealer will ask for the VIN or engine number before sending parts, to avoid the hassle of irate customers when the wrong parts turn up.

RAVE often has notes on differing parts.

Lionel, Is it the 2.5 TDI engine or the older 2 1/4 indirect injection diesel?

    Hello Keith,

That is a 2.25 not a 2.5 (which was never sold in Australia!). I think you will find that most engine gasket sets will, where there are differences, supply both versions (for example, on this engine, the manifold gaskets). But be prepared to supply the engine number or at least suffix anyway.

The engine number is on the sloping bit of the block, just below and in front of the exhaust manifold.

U gotta get diesel gasket set Lionel. Petrol is completly different except for the side cover plate gaskets. I just been through this. Im still looking for a supplier for a set of 5 ring standard piston rings. Dont machine the head as the "hot spots" are supposed to be proud of the head surface. The head gasket is special and has special semi circular rings that hold the hot spots in place. This is why they come loose and cause damage coz ppl get them machined flat with the head and they come loose. Have fun Lionel.

I need to work on mine as well. Its in a 6x6 fire truck I built, and last summer I went to start it and it started knocking. I think I have dropped a pre-combustion chamber. Its next in the workshop after I get the shorty out. I will be buying gaskets and stuff too.

    G'day Rod,

The diesel requiring a special gasket set and the hot spots is damn handy information to know about!

I had a look at the clutch side of things - at least they appear to be the same set up between the two fuel varieties. Or am I wrong about that? ..... too Have you tried England for the oversized rings - it may be your best bet Cost of freight is a bit poisonous though!

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

The clutch is heavier duty on the diesel on the 2a at least - not sure about the S3, but many petrol vehicles have probably been fitted with the diesel clutch.
