Not wrong. Trees worked as well.

Holdens were ludicrously underbraked even by the standards of the 1950s! In the early sixties, driving my Citroen, after the first couple of rear end collisions I adorned the rear end with a "Power Brakes" sign. The drums were no larger than the far lighter VW, for example, let alone the large inboard fully powered discs on the Citroen (appeared in 1955).

Shockers, weren't they? My sister had a 2.4 litre Jag. When I first drove that I was gobsmacked. So, that's what brakes are? Rubbish by todays standard, but a revelation after an EH.

A mate had an XJ6 Jag, sensational braking.
No wonder Jag rear ends were very popular with the Street Rod fraternity back in the 80's.
