The top spring should be at the back of the shoes.

I think there's enough clearance with it at the front but pulling from the back tips the shoes against the steadies on the backplate.

Yep. I didnt see that either, good spotting Colin, I must be slipping. The springs hold the shoes against the backing plate. If they are fitted the wrong way the shoes will be pulling outwards and wearing on the edges, and causing braking problems.Quote:

Ive installed a series 2 steering box for the time but I'm having a go of reconditioning the s3 box
