The top spring should be at the back of the shoes.

I think there's enough clearance with it at the front but pulling from the back tips the shoes against the steadies on the backplate.

Thanks gents. I put them back on the same way i took them off. Ill get that fixed up and back on tonight
I’ve got a funny feeling I need to check mine too. Thinking from the pic I’ve got of them, they’re around the wrong way too [bigwhistle]

I've been fortunate enough to get my hands on a couple of spare steering boxes. My original had some problems with the rocker shaft being cracked and the nut having a split in it.
Ive installed a series 2 steering box for the time but I'm having a go of reconditioning the s3 box
