    The top spring should be at the back of the shoes.

    I think there's enough clearance with it at the front but pulling from the back tips the shoes against the steadies on the backplate.

    Yep. I didnt see that either, good spotting Colin, I must be slipping. The springs hold the shoes against the backing plate. If they are fitted the wrong way the shoes will be pulling outwards and wearing on the edges, and causing braking problems.

    I’ve got a funny feeling I need to check mine too. Thinking from the pic I’ve got of them, they’re around the wrong way too

    The pic was just for show. Ive since packed the bearings with grease and fixed the tab on the washer.

    I've been fortunate enough to get my hands on a couple of spare steering boxes. My original had some problems with the rocker shaft being cracked and the nut having a split in it.

    Ive installed a series 2 steering box for the time but I'm having a go of reconditioning the s3 box
