I've just been asked the same question by someone else. I'll take some photos as I re-assemble. There is only one O-ring on each to replace (as long as nothing is badly worn or broken inside). I did find a phosphor bronze bush in each was loose and had allowed some wear, just used Loctite on reassembly.

The worst part is getting all the old grease off all the parts.

Had 2 sets of Selectro hubs over the years - both ended up broken - and not from hard use either, they just seem to hand grenade. Ditch them and got standard hubs, much better from my experience.

I've heard that about several brands of freewheel hubs and yet vehicles turn up that have had them fitted for years of use.
Maybe because they were left permanently unlocked, maybe driving style, maybe luck......who knows ?

I read somewhere on AULRO that the Power Lock hubs (made under licence by Shute Upton) were the weakest design around but I have two vehicle with them fitted. One was very high usage before I got it ? Go figure.....

Yeah, I know plenty of people who haven't had an issue, no idea why I did - they got used a bit, nothing major, but with 2 sets owned and 2 sets broken, you'll appreciate why I'm a bit gun shy of them personally. :)

Different results may be due to manufacturing tolerances, or, perhaps more likely, different driving styles.

Freewheel hubs were never a factory option for Series Landrovers, and were always fitted by dealers, or possibly state distributors. As today, the dealers made money from the options.

From memory, Selectros were fairly late on the scene. At this date it will be just about impossible to determine when they were fitted, as free wheel hubs were often fitted by owners long after the vehicle was sold new.

A few months ago, I replaced my '71 2A's Power Lock fwhs with standard hubs from Bearmach as they wouldn't stay locked off road. Can't speak for economy as it feels pretty thirsty anyway, but the steering on bitumen feels different. Not bad, but certainly different. Needed a new bearing outer nut and gasket plus the hubs themselves , wasn't too difficult.
