    It's Adventure Time! My '72 88"

    Hi All,

Well after almost 2 years of talking about buying this I finally got it home yesterday! Only took 5 hours to move it 10 kays!

It's a 2.286L petrol with a Stomberg carby (I think of a Holden - thanks to those that informed me) and has relatively little rust - a bit in the door tops and bottoms, and what appears to just be surface rust on pretty much everything underneath.

My son thinks it's the best and just wants to play in it all the time

I bought it for adventures with my son and daughter as they grow up, and boy did it dish it out from the get go. It was a mission to get it home. It was stored in a shed about 10 minutes from my place with about 30 other cars all side by side. All the cars are parked 90 degrees to the centre "path", with about 2.5m of room to get them out. Long story short the left side brakes were seized but we could get to them without moving the car, which was parked 90 degrees to the "path" in the shed, so we couldn't drag it out without damaging adjacent cars. Bit by bit, we got there in the end. This involved moving the car opposite (which thankfully ran), changing the sunrayser rims to the now fitted defender rims, pulling the car half way out with the D3, only to push it back in by hand (with semi-seized brakes - we moved it 2 feet) in order to get the trailer out (don't know what we were thinking there!), pulling it back out again with the trailer attached to the D3, doing a 3 point turn, using the trailer to push it, then pull it, snapping the hook off the winch cable ("she'll be right", he says ) before finally getting it on to the trailer and home 5 hours later. It's like it didn't want to leave, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm in for!

Apparently she was running when parked up, just with a busted clutch slave cylinder, but we couldn't get her to turn over.

My intention is to get her running and rego'd pretty much as is, which will involve the following:
    1. get her running - battery, starter, plugs, leads, dizzy, carby, fuel and filters all need to be checked.
    2. A general clean up - I may paint the axles and springs at this point, but probably only if I have to.
    3. Replace clutch slave.
    4. Pull apart and rebuild brakes (not looking forward to bleeding!)
    5. Make sure electrics are working - hopefully the wiper motors work.
    6. I'll probably also remove the cow catcher bars on the bullbar, though its not as bad looking as I first thought - I don't know if I'll ever need the protection.

After that I'll start tidying up the interior and replacing the ford seats with some originals which I have to re-cover, replace the seals and gaiters, repaint the wheels, replace the Stromberg with an SU copy or something more angle-happy (for offroad) and plenty of other things I'm sure.

I away for a couple of weekends but will hopefully have some time to try and start it when I get back. Having 2 kids under 3 will mean my tinkering time is limited, but I'll do my best!

Oh, and I'm also thinking of naming it Finn, after this adventure loving guy. I had thought about naming it Huckleberry, but I'm not sure I want to have the adventures he had

Anyway, cya in a couple of weeks!

    Cheers,

    Dan

Unless you find a very cooperative blue slip bloke, the Ford seats will have to go before registration.

Looking forward to seeing progress. How are you planning on carrying kids plus wife in it? And presumably, you will need to get child restraints installed - unless you wait another four or five years.

I should add it was last registered in 2009, i believe with the ford seats?

The eldest is four next year so can be in a booster (no harness required). The youngest may just have to wait. Though that all depends on how long it takes me to get it on the road!

Haha yes i know the numbers don't add up regarding the number of seats. I figure the wife won't mind having a weekend to herself!

    Cheers

But how long had it been registered for? And were those seats in it when it was first registered, or had it been registered from new? Probably a lot more cooperative pink slip people than blue slip (not exactly cooperative rather should say slack!).

Yeah thats a fair point! I'll see what the mechanic says. I want to change them back anyway so not too big a deal if i have to do it before rego.

    Cheers

Wow! Body-wise it looks very straight.

Looking forward to more detailed pictures.

You need an N70ZZ battery if you hunt around you will find different cca and variable pricing.
Most batteries will start a 2.25 but the N70ZZ(or equivalent) is the correct size.

I have Super Charger, gold plus in my Series2 and 3
810 CCA, fits nicely in the original battery housing.
Had no trouble cranking the original 186 Holden 6cyl motor fitted to my S3
Also used them in my V6 Mitsubishi's

As Colin says. Anything that fits reasonably in the carrier will have plenty of capacity - the engine is easy to start, although the Stromberg may make it a bit harder.
