    Electronic ignition conversion

Just had a great weekend away with lrocv up at mt skene
    It was wet wet wet
Any car troubles were ignition based
Moisture, points , distibutor caps etc
Even my set of points decided not to work , at the end if the trip , despite having functioned just fine all weekend
This led me to think about converting to an electronic ignition
    I think options are
    Lumintion
    Pertronics
    Bosch
Anyone have any ideas on best options , cost etc
    Pete

    Luminition Ignition

I assume you are running a standard 2.25 petrol, not Rover V8....

Either way one of these will do you: https://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID800074

The one I bought was the 'standard' version which works with both the standard 2.25 and the 3.5 V8. Don't know about the performance model... best ask.

I originally fitted it to my 88" when it had the 4 cylinder engine and then transferred it to the V8 when I did a rebuild and put the V8 in. The only change was that the rotor/interrupt or thingy in the distributor had to be swapped from the 4 segment version to the 8 segment version.

Recommend that you also fit a decent set of leads and a good quality ignition coil (if the coil doesn't come with the kit which with the performance version it does). Even with the standard kit I managed to blow up my stock ignition coil (overheating) because it couldn't take the power being generated. The end cap literally blew out. Can't remember what coil I have in at the moment - magnacore possibly - but this works fine.

Additional benefit is that you can fit a kill switch/key switch to the power supply to the luminition unit which can provide a bit of extra security to prevent engine being started if someone breaks the steering lock.

    More ideas here: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...gnition-system

If money is not too much of an object and you want to tinker try an MSD system Ignition Management | Ignition System | Motorsport | Home | Demon Tweeks

I have one of these MDS units on my 4.6 Disco and they work great. Same thing about the condition of the coil and leads apply as you will get arcing across the leads if they are less than 100%. If water ingress is really your problem you could go for a waterproofed MSD system here: Marine - MSD Performance Products | Tech Support: 888-258-3835

If you are running a V8 you could try this: Land Rover Distributors - Performance Distributors Performance Distributors

At the point that my 88" distributor breaks I may well look to upgrade to this Land Rover Distributors - Performance Distributors Performance Distributors and replace the luminition system and dizzy with a single sealed unit which looks pretty much completely waterproof.

    Accuspark

Got this in my Series 3...

    AccuSpark

Works well, no complaints and they supply the whole dizzy so no rebuilding. Had Luminition in an old 2CV and Piranha in a MGB V8. both also very good but twice the price. The Accuspark kit comes with plugs lead and the coil, I'd strongly recommend getting their coil.

Only issue I had with it was the +ive wire in the dizzy was a bit loose and came into contact with the spindle, which wore away the plastic on the wire, which caused a short that screwed my immobiliser, but costly, but fixed with a bit of shrink wrap and a couple of well placed small cable ties to prevent the wire in the dizzy from moving.

Installed by PO so don't know if above fault was a factory fault or not.

Having had a couple of "conversion" failures on other makes, I fitted one of these to my series 3 - plus a Weber- starts first pop even after a months rest..

Gone up a bit as I paid $136.42 delivered but a quality unit.

    Update on this one...

Cancel my 'No complaints about Accuspark' comment.

Over the last month or so the ignition was stopping for a second or two whilst driving, it was a weird symptom, almost like running out of fuel for a second to two... then business as usual, for 10 minutes and them another event. I guessed it might be the Ignition.

Yesterday we had that 'new noise' experience, a high pitched quiet whistle, before I could guess the problem she dies on me completely. Looking under the bonnet the rotor arm had grabbed the inside of the dizzy cap and ripped it off cutting all but one of the ignition leads off at the plug and ripping out the vacuum hose. The Cap had big chunks missing and the inside of the distributor was full of filings. RAC time.

Pulled the dizzy apart today hoping it was a case of a new cap and clips, not a chance, the centrifuge in the bottom of the distributor is governed by 2 springs. One was completely missing, no evidence of its existence at all, so suspect it may never have been there. The absence of the spring has caused the centrifuge arms to swing out into the casing, dig in (hence the filings) and eventually its grabbed enough of the casing to arrest the spindle, cause it to bend and the subsequent oscillation of the rotor arm has ripped the cap free, spun it around a few time and caused the damage up top.

Im guessing our occasional heart attacks were the dizzy grabbing for a second and then freeing itself.

So the whole distributor is in the bin. A replacement unit from the Au supplier is $145, a power spark is about the same money (on ebay from Simonbbc) from the UK, they seem to get a good press, so i might give them a go.

In the mean time i have the old lucas D4 with the micro advance retard screw on it, going to treat it to a new set of points and condenser and go the traditional way until i decide.

I'm no expert but looking at the internals of the Accuspark Distributor the parts and assembly doesn't really look too robust... but i guess they are cheap. This one was about 18 months old, so i didn't quite get the 8 years of faultless motoring they boast about.

Attached photo of the distributors internals, with some cutting edge illustrations to show where the missing spring should be...
