    New starter motor woes

Put the new starter motor on yesterday turned the key - nothing. Took it off checked it on the bench all ok , back on - Nothing.Went to crank the engine with the starting handle -engine wouldnt move. Backed off the nuts holding sm onto the casing tried again and it turned the motor and fired but made a horrible racket. Sounds as if the sm pinion isnt disengaging? Tightened the nuts up again turned the key- no movement. If i tighten nuts to just finger tight it will work but sounds terrible + the sm is flopping about on the studs. Not understanding whats going on. SM is new. Fly wheel looks fine. Using same nuts and washers. What am I missing?
All comments/ ideas gratefully received as always,
    cheers,
    D

You sure it's the correct SM? Have you checked it against the old one? It doesn't take much difference to be dead wrong.

    Thanks.
    Looks the same.
I'll get the measure out and make sure.
The only difference I can see is the large spring sits slightly out of its seat on one side by about 3mm , although cant get to grips with understanding whether this would cause the symptoms i am having.

measured up and all looks similar. Will have a further think.
