Power Steering conversion on Series 3 V8

Looking for recommendation on behalf of friends with a Series 3 V8 that has turned into a chore to drive as they get along in years.
Who around the Melbourne area could be / is willing / recommended to perform a power steering conversion on a Series 3 V8?

Friends have a relatively low km S3 that has a camper conversion and as they get older the lack of power steering is restricting use.
Struggling to find someone willing to take this job on, or perhaps just don't know who to talk to.

    Suggestions?

Given that every way of doing this requires engineering and a good working knowledge of Land Rovers, I should think there's very few if any that would take this on to be honest - maybe Les Richmond in Thomastown but be aware that they would be looking at big dollars to get it done, but I'd give them a call and ask. Failing that, they maybe on a hiding to nothing if they aren't up to doing it themselves and having it engineered.

I've seen at least 4 different ways of doing it as well, so even deciding on what box, what steering column, what chassis mods, etc would be hard work - you'd have to start with an Engineer and figure out what is acceptable to them.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I'm with Homestar on this - Les Richmond in Thomastown are great, but it could be expensive...

I'm in the process of doing this myself and the engineer to sign off on it for rego here in Vic is very expensive. $150/hr and a $500 retainer, plus they charge for travel time at the same rate. Can't see me getting out of it for under $1000. As a comparison, when I got my holden conversion engineered in NSW it cost $440 all up and took about 30 min - that was 10 years ago though.

So far on the power steering project I'm probably in for about $800 in parts and I haven't even turned a spanner yet. The labour costs would sink this as a viable project if you were paying a fabricator/mechanic.

    Cheers,

    Adam

If it is a Stage 1 V8 (as opposed to a S3 with a V8 in it), you might possibly find a conversion can be done in a straight forward manner by using Defender steering box, jack shaft, column etc and RRC/Disco PAS pump, hosing, cooler etc.

    It's a factory fitted V8, does that make it a Stage 1?

Yes it is - but I thought they used standard series 3 steering up to the relay box.

    a number have done it

    Hi,
I has Anthony Johnson of British 4WD Imports in Melbourne convert my stage one diesel to PAS but it was easy as he also convertedthe front to coils and discs--basically just fitted a 110 front end with welded brackets--great car to drive and yes adetailed engineer report with photos was needed--but nothing like as expensive as recent post--shop around maybe. Reason I did this was it also had an ambulance body. I know a number of people have done PAS so hopefully they will reply. One issue with it is that if the normal 110 setup is used it fouls the springs but different parts--maybe from P38 RR's might solve this clearance issue. In the old days you could add a ram to the steering arm I think that helped.
Have you checked in the search function on AULRO as I am sure there is info.

There's this : TDZ Power steering for Series Land Rovers

At 1400 Euro it's not cheap, but apparently no chassis mods required.

Also, have they thought about a good service / refurb of the steering box / relay / swivels ? and perhaps different tyres ??

    Cheers,
    John

Thanks Garry, the original manual simply states version as Land- Rover V8.
On the inner cover there is a small notation Land Rover Ltd issue 2 1/1980.
    At least dates it.
