    Replacing Bonnet Bushes

I have recently tried to install new bonnet bushes on my series three. I had only just installed them when upon closing the bonnet they both broke in half. I've ordered some more bushes to replace them but before I try again, is there any trick to installing them? I have cleaned out the hinge area and have lubricated it a bit with silicone spray but they are pretty tight and won't move around at all. Do I put the bushes in first and then install the bonnet or do I place the bushes in the bonnet hinges first? The old bushes that I had were in bits and pieces so I couldn't use these as a bit of a reference as to their position i.e. which way does the offset channel go.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Regards
    Vince

    Hi Vince,

Can't comment on why they may have broken, but I fit mine in the bulkhead hinge first, with slots aligned so I could place the bonnet on them easily.
I can't recall them being terribly tight, they were firm, however I was still able to align them with my fingers.

The only issue I can think of is that the slot is not symmetrical in the cylinder, and there is only one right way of putting them - if you put them the wrong way they will jam. The bush should be in the bulkhead fitting with the slot facing up and with the slot offset towards the back of the vehicle. The bonnet is then put on with it straight up - really needs two people.

    Bush suppliers

there are two hinge bush suppliers that I've found in Oz. Th4e one that's north of Sydney charges a little more and their bushes are a little smaller, suitable for a less worn hinge. th3 one that's south of sydney charges a bit less, supplies larger bushes that suit the more worn hinges on my S3, Tallulah. The smaller bushes simply fall out for me .

i just had a look at the maintenance manual, and it isn't obvious which way round the bush goes. When installing the bonnet I set up the slots to be further forward. I expect that with age, each vehicle has worn a certain way so one way will fit one landy better, and not the other.

    Cheers,
