    the Captain's heart transplant

Ok its time to give the old captain a new ticker.

The 2.6 in it is dead but can be worked on as a later project, so I am rebuilding a 2.25 diesel i had in the shed.

Now before everyone goes on about the massive job of a petrol to diesel conversion, the massive loss in HP in going to diesel, I'll adress that yes it is under powered, yes its a big job but if I wanted way more power I'd just go get a new car. But I like the under powered land rovers and always wanted a diesel 4x4 before finding the captain. So the journey has begun....

I stripped the 2.25 as it was an unknown 'running previously' engine.

Cylinder 2 is scored so its getting a rebore in the next week or two, the middle crank bearing was showing significant wear so all bearings are up for renew.

Once the rebore size is done I'll order all the new bits, as I am going to make it work as best it can with a slight tickle to the head by port matching, I'll be fitting a better flowing exhaust and better flowing air intake. I also plan to get an up graded cam with better duration on the lobes.

So I hear you say"why bother?", well ive had great success with doing mild modifications to engines before that just make them work better without going for big power and keeping them really reliable. So as I plan on using it as my daily, id like it to breath properly and be reliable in sticky situations and finally to be a complete Landy too.
As i progress ill add more photos and findings.

You need to be aware that the bell housing is different for the fours and the six.

The gearbox is further back on the six as well, so the standard radiator hoses will not work. Apart from that, and, of course the fuel and wiring systems needing changing, there should be no issues that I can see. Except for the prop shaft lengths the drive train is the same.

Out of interest what happened to the 2.6 ?

They do come up occasionally but a lot ended up as boat anchors. A mate might have a 3 litre Rover motor available soon but I've already got my name down for the cylinder head.

I need to get a move on with mine, started work on it back in 2010.

The 2.6 ate a valve and the head is fluffyducked, I know that the parts are hard to come by so I chose a diesel transplant while I have the ample time to try and accumulate the necessary parts to make the 2.6 similar to what Homestar is making with his young fella.
As the teardown of the 2.6 goes along i will do another post for it.

Someone had some 'reco' heads advertised on the forum a while back.

Is it just the head & piston(s) you need ?

I have been given a spare head (thanks again Homestar) and I think that I just picked up 5 out of 6 piston ànd rings through another member.
As i haven't done a complete tear down of it (only got enough room for one at a time in the horse shed) im still in the dark with what I need. In reality ill need everything as it will be a complete rebuild for a better working engine just as Homestar has done.
    So let the expenses mount

Best of luck with it, 6-cylinder parts are getting more difficult to find and more expensive.

Four Wheel Drives (now in Hallam) used to have some 6-cyl stuff, mostly from early army auctions. Problem is after a couple of changes of ownership I'm not sure if they even know what they've got. If you get stuck for anything let me know and I can call in & see what they still have in stock.

Yeah, took me almost 2 years to get all the bits I wanted at prices I could afford. Keep your eyes open, they do come up. As I was after OS pistons and undersized bearings the hunt took longer and parts came from all over Aus and the world.

If you need any second hand bits and pieces when you get that far, sing out, I've got a couple of spare engines now.
