Thread: Stromberg Crapurettors

My stagey started really drinking heavily so I thought I would look at the dreaded STROMBERGS. Hooked my O2 sensor up it's date and went for a drive the best I saw was about 12.5 /1 a/f ratio, almost running with the choke on.
1st problem special tool need to adjust mixture, so spent a few hours machining tool up, worked really well
2nd problem no new parts on hand
Tried adjusting needles no change, in fact needles fell off end of adjusting screws
Pulled mixing chamber tops off one baggy diaphragm one split, yes problem solved, naaaa, went to spare parts stash manifold and carbs off wrecked wagon popped the tops two like new diaphragms a quick measure of the needles and they appeared to be slightly fatter than the originals, cleaned up and changed the whole lot over went for a run low 13's still to rich. Looked at the jet height between the two sets of carbs 2mm difference ones on the vehicle way lower,rich,. Had to remove carbs trying not to wreck any gaskets after a lot of googling decided to tap jets up 1mm , reset float level while there no gaskets were harmed in this process, put it all back together went for a drive mid 13s and leaning out at full throttle crap, no adjusting made any difference,really lean at idle. Pulled tops again put original needles back in success mid to high 14's at cruise low13's with foot hard up its hole,idle 20's more googling.
Temp compensators Ive never looked at them because manual says DONT TOUCH . There's nothing in them 2 screws and a valve and metal strip. Pulled them apart cleaned them up and reassembled, got 3 bowls of water one ice cold, luke warm and boiling hot. Do the adjusting screw up until the valve seals place in warm water and see if valves move at same time adjust place both back in ice the back in luke warm, then try the boiling water to see if they open the same amount.
Refitted after replacing a stuffed washer two per unit idle improved a lot not perfect still up and down but very acceptable.
Ive always been scared of these horrible non adjustable carbs but this was actually very satisfying now have to clock up some real km s and see what fuel consumptions like

Its a LM2 Wideband O2 sensor from INOVATE MOTORSPORTS, I use it as a portable device using it in the tail pipe with a sniffer tube, not as accurate as a permanently mounted plug futher up the ex but it still tells you whats happening
Use to do all carb adjustments now and I wont bother trying to do a tune up with out it now ,takes the guess work out
