It was just a sudden flame out, no noise/crunching or grinding so I suspected the dizzy straight away. Pulled the cap off and hit the starter and sure enough the rotor has lost its will to spin. Pulled the dizzy out expecting to find the pin in the drive dog broken but all was good. So looks like some more internal investigation is required!! I was going to pull the exhaust manifold off and check the valves and try to slow the road lubrication system down anyway so just doing it a bit sooner now Series 3, 6 cyl, rover engine thermostat housing 😟. Will get some pics and keep you posted!
    Hope it's not too serious.....

Chazza will be making the thermostat housings sometime soon, I sent him a spare to use as a pattern.

I wonder what made that happen !
    Is the camshaft OK ?

Part number is 515969 for the shaft & phosphor bronze gear.

Four Wheel Drives in Hallam list the assembly in their old catalogue at $385 but they also list the drive gear as a separate item.
The gear part number is Q61 and the cost was $38.50.
Might be worth a phonecall, I can get there possibly on Monday and check for you.

Buy Drive Shaft Oil Pump 6 Cyl Part 515969
Same part number for the Rover 6-cylinder (surprise, surprise)
ROVER P4 P5, LAND ROVER 6 CYLINDER OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT/GEAR ASSEMBLY NOS 515969 | eBay
Gear only but maybe not suitable
ROVER P3 P4 P5 and LAND ROVER SERIES I OIL PUMP DRIVING GEAR NEW NOS 212308 | eBay

How is the gear fixed to the shaft ?

Awesome thanks for the info. If I can get just the gear I will. It is just held onto the shaft with a dowel pin, probably 4mm and the shaft is fine so easy change over Series 3, 6 cyl, rover engine thermostat housing 😟.

Looks like the bronze gear has just worn over its 41 years. Everything is spinning freely. Gear that drives it on the cam is part of the cam and obviously steel so I guess this is sacrificial.

This could be caused if the retaining clamp for the distributor has been over tightened causing the dist spindle to be tight in the bush which puts a load on the gear , i have seen this on Morris Mini's.

Visited Four Wheel Drives this afternoon but they don't think they have the gears or shafts any longer.
Some slow moving parts were sold on a few years ago and a lot of secondhand stuff went to the tip (under the new owners !!).
They will look but don't hold out much hope.

The gear on it's own isn't listed in the Land Rover parts manuals, Four Wheel Drives probably got them from one of the army auctions.
