I assume you mean a 2.25 petrol - 17mpg
Anyone have a rough idea of how many litres/100km a 1978 2.25 litre SWB Petrol would use?
Obviously depends on weight carried and racks and headwind and stuff but just trying to do a rough calculation for fuel required on an extended trip
Highway and 2WD dirt roads mainly
Thanks

Driving a LWB I use anything between 14 and 20l /100km . On quiet outback roads, at a sensible speed of about 65-70km/hr with few gear changes I get up to 100km more out of a tank full than driving around town. That's with an old worn 7:1 CR engine. There are too many factors involved to give a precise figure. I imagine with a SWB, 8:1Cr engine with better carby and a synchro box you'd get better fuel economy .

As others have commented, there are many variables - which compression ratio, whether the state of tune is good, tyre size and pressure, whether the brakes are dragging, and most importantly, the driver! Worth noting that an economy device that was an option for many years (although, it seems, rarely added) was a heavy spring that came in at half throttle so you had to really push to get more accelerator than this.
However, I agree that around 16l/100km as a reasonable figure to use for planning.

That is a very simple, but ingenious "economy device" and no doubt it would have given positive results.
With a 2.25 I always plan for 15mpg (18 litres per 100) as the worst case, on or off road and that way I always have enough to cover the trip.
This allows for a minimum of 250 kays per 45 litre (10 gallon) tank.
