Timing was the nest issue. The tensioner had work out completely and wasn't doing anything at all, the chain guide had broken off and was causing the rattling that was coming from the pump area. Cam shaft went in no problems at all. Quite relieved as i forgot to give the engineer the new one to check it. New cam, crank and tensioner gears went in. Bit pricey some of them bot the damage dome to the old ones by the bits crashing about in the timing case were a sight to behold. You can see the wear on the tensioner, nothing left to lock onto the tensioner arm, so it was just bouncing around, which explains the wandering timing issues. The replacement elbow was only about 6 quid so I'd recommend anyone taking the timing cover off to bung a new one in, or at least get one ordered just in case. New chain too of course

Anyone know why i get a box with a ? in it instead of photos? I can see all TimNZ's photos on his post... is it because he has a V8 and I've just got a 2.25???

Still not able to see my images so hoping not to repeat them...
New oil pump went it. New part from Turners, give the price stupid not to replace the old one, looks like a well made unit, better than the one that'sIMG_3297.jpg in there, not sure if that was OEM or not but looking at the drive shaft cut and design I'd guess it wasn't.
Same deal with the cam shaft, the Turners offering was great quality at a good price.
Dropped in the new pistons. Now here was the dilemma, they were oversize +.010. Turners only did a Spanish make in +.020, all other +.010s were a bit pricey except the dreaded blue box parts, so yes I went for them, they seemed to be quite reasonable quality, so just have to see how we go. New cam followers and slides, again Turners would have blown the budget, these were bearmarch. Lock wired the nuts into place. All assembled with a generous helping of engine assembly grease. I re used the old push rods, these seemed to be straight and not too worn.
The crank and big end shells dropped in nicely, don't think it mentioned in the workshop manual that the big end shells are handed. Fortunately I noticed that the oil holes and runs are slightly off centre. I think its possible to chuck them in the wrong way around, despite the locating nibs, and essentially cut off the oil from the crank, presumably with disastrous results. Replaced the crank shims with standard size ones. The main seal went in with less fuss than i expected, after i eventually worked out it was located on the outside of the shells not the inside!
Once together, the end-float was good and i could turn her over by hand using the crank pulley as a wheel.
