Made up some new footwells today, but I'll get to that.
After taking the tub off and the front end apart, I gave the chassis a good clean inside and out. I poured some concentrated soap into all the holes of the chassis and into the outriggers. Stuck the gurney into every hole I could and fired away, a thick reddy Brown soapy paste bubbled out of the holes, eventually the water cleared out after some heavy spraying.
I then cleaned off any flakey paint then gave the whole thing except for the rear crossmember with KBS chassis paint. It's a 3 part kit degreaser, primer/converter then the paint. It's self leveling and dries rock hard it's good stuff. I didn't clean the chassis up too much, I left all the weld splatter and imperfections it just adds character.
I cleaned up the rear axel and springs and painted them also, looking back I regret not taking the springs apart and re oiling them instead. I will probably strip them back one day and go that way about it. Overall the chassis came up good, a few spot I need to go over like under the bump stops. And a few other spots like inside the spring hangers, the bulkhead brackets and on top of the gearbox crossmember.
I cut into the rear crossmember a bit to investigate the damage, I decided I'm going to repair it. I'm gonna cut the face off and re weld a new piece, same with the bottom and behind. It's not the worst and I can beef it up a bit in the process.
I'm gonna have to get out and take more photos now, I havnt taken any in a while and have done plenty of work since
    Cheers Jim

    Hi Jim

I have a station wagon and I have 1 fueltank at the rear in front of the rear cross member and 2 tanks the same as your left tank under the seats. The fuel cocks for these are on the seat box.

    Cheers

    Steve

Thanks very much, I figured it would be same. From memory it's almost too far to reach from the drivers seat. I'll post a pic up some stage of it
    Cheers Jim

At least your Starboard Navigation Lamp works ok.

JEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZ! Talk about how to dismantle a Series LR in 2 or 3 easy lessons, James.

Takes me back to when I did much the same to my '66 S2A SWB. A really enjoyable experience.

    Ah, happy days.

Yeah I know I'm smashing through the thread at the moment, I didn't take a lot of photos when I done the work I'm just trying to remember what I done. And really there's only like 2 or 3 steps to pulling one apart lol

Thanks very much, I wish I started the thread when I started the project but I wasn't a member. It would be in much more detail, the projects been going for like 2 years on and off now and I can't remember everything. I'll get out in the shed and take some more photos soon of where it's at. Too many projects and work but I'm really trying to get the s3 somewhat finished sooner rather than later.
    Cheers Jim

    S3 rebuild

That brings back memories. Sold my yellow S3 recently, same colour as yours. The fuel tap you mentioned is for the two tanks. Check which way it works, as from memory it is the larger bottom part of the lever which points to the tank you want to use. Found that out the hard way

If you decide to remove the ignition switch, mark the wires very carefully, as the location is not intuitive, the colours on the wires will have disappeared, and wiring diagrams bear no resemblance to reality.

    cheers
    fred
