    Series III Modernisation

    Greetings,
I'm currently building up a Series III SWB 4 cyl Hardtop and am looking to include a few modern aspects into the build. First Question, can the alloy rims from a Disco or Defender fit the standard Series III wheel hubs?

    Thanks

    Brian

the centre hub will get in the way if you try to fit alloys. Dynamic and Kings make steels that will fit. I've also used old school defender 130 HD steel rims, so maybe all defender steel rims fit?

As far as I know, all Defender steel wheels will fit, as will D1 steel wheels. You need to be aware that fitting wider tyres will increase steering effort (no power steering) and in most cases increase turning circle, for little if any benefit.

Ahhh yes JD I forgot that bit! I put both 32x11.5r15s ATs and 255/85r16 MTs on my 88". turned it into a HEAVY beast to steer .... could have been partly my LSD in the front too.....

Welcome to the forum Brian. 👍

Apart from the rims, what else you have planned? I need to get my butt into gear and start on mine again - got disc brakes and power steering on mine, wiring will be high tech too, but I’d not recommend that unless you know your electrics well.

So, spill the beans, show us your ride and what your plans are. 👍😊

I have fitted Disco 1 rims to my series.
It required 300mm spacers to get the centre cap to go back on.
They bind in the hubs. I have been told by one source that having them machined is a no no for compliance in NZ.
The do pull up properly but getting them off at the moment requires a soft faced hammer.

Many thanks for the information, saves a lot of time and energy.

I already have a set of white sunraysia rims, that I'm not a fan of. I wonder if painting them black might help their look?

Basically I'm trying to copy a picture of a SWB Defender that my wife came across. The current colour of the car is yellowish with a white roof, and I want to change it to metalic red similar to the modern Mazda colour. Using the Red & Black theme as much as possible, will come to a black roof.

Is there a air conditioning system that can be fitted?

Current operations are cutting out the chassis rust and replacing the front beam and outriggers for the springs.

I've already bought (but not fitted), electronic ignition & electric raditor fan for added reliability

Future plans are for high back seats, parabolic springs and a serious mount of noise reduction.

This is a very slow project for me, however it will get there in the end.

Attached is the Defender I'm emulating.

I don't want to be the one that bursts your bubble - but it might be cheaper if you go and buy that Defender...

    Just saying.

    Just saying.

Also henceforth a modernised series will devaluate from the time it is altered , where an original will appreciate.

    Series III Modernisation

Yeah but it's not all about the money sometimes and let's face it - Series 3's are far from collectable or valuable.

But yes, if you want a Defender, probably easier to buy one.
