Your engine should have a round inlet restriction fitted with 4 holes in it. If yes removing it will give you some more power but remember there was a reason it was fitted in the first place. m
Just after some thoughts, my stage one clutch exploded yesterday and needs either the box or engine pulled. Ive never been impressed with the performance of this vehicle, particularly when compared to my other stage one which hauls ass!
Im thinking of pulling the engine out and doing a rebuild, Id like to up the power, but haven't got a huge budget..just wondering do I go a worked 3.5, 3.9 or 4l+ any thoughts from practical experience and approx costs would be appreciated. Current motor is a standard 3.5 carby with electronic ignition.

Hi Summit,
Similar story to how my Stage One ended up being overhauled. By the time I finished I had rebuilt the motor from 3.5 to 3.9, 4 barrel inlet manifold, 450 Holley, performance camshaft, extractors etc. Also rebuilt the gearbox and transfer case plus new steering box, radiator and clutch. Not cheap but very happy with the result. Certainly a lot more power, just have to slide the window open and throw the parachute out when I need to haul it up quickly!!
Love my Stage One!

Is your Stage 1 ex Navy - the colour would indicate it may be.

Hi Gary,
I believe that it was originally used as a RAN clearance vehicle in the Northern Territory. I purchased it from a very good friend of mine over 20 years ago who owned it for quite a few years before that. He was told that it was a RAN clearance vehicle by the owner he purchased it from who apparently was the first private owner of the vehicle. It was purchased by my mate in Darwin and he drove it down to Perth.
It certainly looks very similar to the 2 examples of RAN Stage Ones on the REMLR website. I have not seen another Stage One Truck Cab in this colour scheme since owning mine over the last 20 years. I would love to know if anyone else has one similar or knows of another truck cab with the light blue colour scheme knocking around still.
Regards Warrick.

Hi Warrick,
Thanks for that information - I doubt it was solely dedicated to Clearance Diving use in Darwin as no permanent service diving teams were based in Darwin. There was/is a reserve unit there and I would suggest that any vehicles that the reserve diving team would have used would have been drawn out of base units either from Coonawarra or Larrakia. However as there no many Stage 1s around I am sure they always used the same vehicles.
So I think the information is partly true - of course the vehicle could have been sold off in Perth direct from the RAN Clearance Diving team based out of Garden Island - so are you sure it was released from Darwin?
Irrespective of this, the colour of your vehicle certainly ties in with Navy vehicles of the late 70s early 80s.
These would have all been Z plated vehicles so tracking history on these is somewhat difficult as they were actually Department of Administrative Supply II vehicles used by the RAN, so ARN type records do not exist.
Nice vehicle - the stage 1s are a nice vehicle.
Cheers
Garry

Thanks Gary for shedding a bit more light on the subject. Did you have experience of these vehicles in the RAN? I am interested in finding out more about the service history of Stage One's in the ADF? I know that the New Zealand Defence Force had a large fleet of Stage Ones and there are some nice examples of them in New Zealand. I have visited NZ twice in the last 10 years and was surprised to see quite a few kicking around.
I will speak to my mate Aaron who I purchased the vehicle from and see if he can remember any more about what was told to him when he purchased it. Aaron definitely purchased it in Darwin though but how it got to Darwin I am not sure.
Do you know if the light powder blue colour that the RAN used was sold as an option to the general public in 1981 through Landrover Australia? I have not seen any other light powder blue Stage One Truck Cab's getting around in WA. Would there be any other tell tales that it was ex RAN? Maybe any mods that were fitted by the RAN for service?
It is interesting also that from my very limited research on this subject there doesn't seem to be much knowledge about the history of the Stage One used by ADF and the Stage One's that were used seem to have disappeared once the ADF disposed of them. Do you know if they were used by the RAAF as well?
Regards Warrick.
