    I used a bit of everything suggested … but didn't have a tree or a "come-along" so I had to improvise ...
    I got a metre long 40x40 box that fitted neatly in the end, clamped it in place, stood on the end and "tapped" the buckle with a sledgehammer.

    I'm quite happy with that, pretty square in all directions now.
    Thanks for everyone's ideas, I just needed a bit of confidence to swing that hammer :-)
