    2.6 valve job

Just finished doing the valves on the S3. This is the third time I have done this job in the 18 years I have had the vehicle.
First time was when I got it, leaking head gasket. Probably as it was when the Army finished with it.
Second was 2 years later, leaking head gasket, steel shim gasket fitted dry. That's when I learned that shim gaskets need a squirt of Hylomar.
This time 16 years later broke an exhaust valve spring, didn't notice until the valve burnt because they are double springs. Head gasket as good as when I fitted it.
I skimmed the head this time to remove the wear grooves made by multiple steel shim gaskets. Lapped the valves and all together again.

Parts are getting a bit hard to find lately. Alan at British 4WD had 1 only head gasket in stock. He also has NOS water pump kits for the 2.6. (mid 2018)

I also moved the start solenoid from the RH mudguard to the left, It always annoyed me that the battery and starter were on the left and the cables had to cross over the bell housing to the solenoid. The engine was never a willing starter on winter mornings, so removing 1.4m of starter cable might help.

Lovely to hear it running on 6 pots again

From the look of those pistons it looks like you have cleaned all the carbon off the tops of them . You should always leave about 10mm around the out side edge un cleaned & never clean the carbon from around the top of the bore it acts as a seal , so you may find you may start burning oil.

Thanks, yes I know, but it burns a little oil anyway. I fitted rings last time into bores which are close to the wear limit. If it burns a little more that's ok.

I have access to some NOS water pumps for the 6-cylinder.
I had an advert which seems to have been removed, PM if you want details. I had one taker and I'm trying to make contact with the chap who has them.

Thanks Colin, but I fitted the seal & spindle kit I bought last year, hope to never need to do it again.
If anyone has a pump with the viscous fan drive I would recommend fitting a complete pump, getting the hub adapter off the shaft was a real pain, had to destroy the old spindle to do it.
