Lowering Rear End of Military 109 Series 3

    Hi all,

I am after some advice regarding my 1979 Series 3 109 ex Australian army. Am trying to get the Landy registered in SA, however have been instructed to replace mud flaps as they are too short.
Currently it is fitted with parabolic springs and the rear shackle connection is 130mm between centres.

In a bid to save the original flaps, am considering lowering the rear of the car using a SWB rear spring shackle (80mm between centres).

We are hoping this will lower the back of the vehicle sufficiently. Any advice or concerns are to be welcomed.

    Cheers

The parabolics have been fitted since it’s military service - Does the vehicle sit level or up at the back? How many parabolic leaves are there? If it has 3 in there, it might be too much - you can take a leaf out if this is the case which will drop the arse down a bit. How much too short did they say the mud flaps are?

It sounds like it has the military shackles still in there too, which are longer than standard. Putting standard shackles back in will also drop it.

As Homestar says - replacing the miltary shackles with standard will lower it (long wheelbase and short are the same), and also you can move the front of the spring to the upper bolthole - I think they all have it. (This is better as it keeps the U-joint angles matching).

Thank you for your responses Homestar and JDNSW.

The vehicle does not sit level, as the rear end sits up. It runs up around 80-90mm over the length of the tray.

There are currently 4 leaves in each pack.

The mud flaps are currently 50mm too short, therefore we wish to drop the rear by 50mm.

Yes, military shackles are currently fitted, which are 130mm as seen in picture.

What I am thinking, is to use 80mm shackles on the rear axle, and to lift the front of the spring to the upper bolt hole like JDNSW recommends (to ensure U joint angles are consistent).

Your thoughts again would be appreciated.

Could you not just rivet or bolt an extension on your mud flaps to satisfy the beauracrats
would seem your spring setup works quiet well as existing?.??

I'd just be replacing the mud flaps with appropriately sized cut rubber matting from Bunnings etc , When its registered put your LandRover mudflaps back.

I did same but when I got mine regoed pulled them off completely. The were never fitted from new.

A complication with lowering the suspension is that military S2s have a spacer on the spring stops you may need to remove. They also have longer shock absorbers, although it is anyone's guess what was fitted with the parabolics.
