    2.2L diesel reco- timing problems

My 1980 series 3 has just had a complete engine recondition- including injectors, fuel pump , new camshaft, timing chain and of course; all worn parts replaced. Qualified mechanic is tearing his hair out because it is blowing black smoke after many hours trying to get the timing right. He has even sent the fuel pump back to check it is right.please does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thankyou

Black smoke is probably from injection timing, assuming that injectors are new and the pump is correctly adjusted.

Looking at the manual, it would be easy to not get the timing exactly right, especially if you do not have the proper timing tool, and not too hard to get the pump drive gear out by a tooth. In addition, it needs to be noted that a loose timing chain, possibly due to an issue with the tensioner, will also affect timing, and, of course, getting the camshaft timing a tooth out would also have similar effects.

On the SIIa, and I would assume that the SIII would be the same, the camshaft sprocket has about six keyways. Each keyway is 1/6 of a tooth out from the next one. This means that you can get the camshaft timing to within 1/6 of a chain link of exact timing. It is a bit of a time consuming job getting the correct timing. It took me about an hour.

The injector pump has a master spline, so can not be out by a spline. But the screw gear that connects the injector pump to the camshaft could be out by a tooth.

When you installed the injector pump, did you time it correctly by looking at the timing marks through the inspection port on the side of the injector pump and on the flywheel?
