    Engine crossmember replacement

Starting to plan the next major piece of the puzzle.
1977 swb partially stripped down. Mechanicals all still in place.
My engine crossmember is completely shot, got a hole punched in the front and rest of front and underneath holy or at best thin.
Ive got a shiny new replacement (577414) on hand.
Can this be welded in with the engine and gearbox still in place?
The existing one (original) only seems to be welded to the chassis rails front, back and bottom, top is not. So no need for top welding access.
And if so, do I need a special certified welder to do it or will my friendly local be ok?
Or alternately, a fabricated patch to fit front and bottom?
    Thoughts? Advice?
    Ta

If access to all areas to be welded is ok, then just stick the good one in. No Engineer required IMO - it’s not like anyone will be able to tell the difference unless you actually make the welds look good (which the factory ones certainly don’t) 😇

Anyone with decent welding skills would be fine to do it. The chassis is thick enough that you can even arc weld it if need be and I have done work on them before with an old arc welder, although MIG would be easier.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll need to find a hoist and trailer the old girl there as probably best without floor and seats back in. A surgical cut to remove the old then a 3 sided weld each end for the new.
I’ll make sure I take (and post) plenty of before and after pics :-)
My progress is slow ... but steady.
