Torque for rear stub axle bolts.

    Hello from Sherwood.

Is there a specified torque for the six bolts that secure the rear stub axle and brake backing plate to the axle case? If there is I haven’t found it so far.

While I’m at it - how do you set the load on the hubs without a dial gauge?

    Cheers,

    Neil

    G'day Neil,

Just did the front stub axle/ brake backing plate to swivel housing bolts this morning. Series 2A SWB 1966. Mine are 3/8" BSF x 20tpi. I used 35Ft/lb. Felt good and smooth on torquing up.
Make sure you put non-hardening gasket cement on the bolt threads when assembling. Re-torque a few times before locking up.

    Chris,

    Thanks.

Useful advice which I’ll definitely use when I get to the front hubs etc. Appreciated.

My immediate question relates to the nuts and bolts that connect the back stubs to the rear axle casing. These bolts go right through rather than just into the casing.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    G'day Neil,
Ahh sorry I was in front hub mode. My suggestion is measure the thread diameter and TPI to determine the thread type. I use 35Ft/Lb for 3/8" UNF/ BSF steel bolts and nuts. Be careful as quality of steel could be questionable these days. Look for the grade 5 marks from Australian manufacturers.

    Hi.
Are they the bolts that hold the brake backing plate.
If so, I think I did mine to 45 ftlbs.
I did my wheel bearing as per the Green Bible with the Dial gauge.
Was a bit of play when finished, unlike no play, on the modern vehicle.

    Hello again and thanks.

    Yes, they are those bolts.

The original question on the hubs was without the dial gauge used in the manual. I don’t have one.

    Cheers,
