As Homestar says, but there is possibly an easier to fix problem - the linkage to the overdrive is very close to the body, and it would be easy for it to rattle against the body when in overdrive. Also, the linkage is prone to rattling, and again, this is likely to change with whether it is in or out of overdrive. A spring can be installed to stop it rattling.
I suggest that you have a good look at the linkage and whether it can rattle when in overdrive.
The overdrive does wear, but wear in either gears or bearings is more likely to result in it howling rather than rattling.
