S3 before and after the resto

Maybe for luxo barge versions but normal versions were silver. But hey - people can do what they want to their own vehicles and Mark has done a magnificent job - but we dont want him to get too much of a swelled head [biggrin]

What I want to know is how he managed to get all those panels so nice and straight - that is beauty to behold [thumbsupbig] as I have never had much luck getting flat LR aluminium panels nice and straight.

The colour is Pastel Green. Code LRC005

I have 235/85r16 tyres on it now. They are second hand Defender rims and tyres. I think they are very close in diameter to 7.50r16 as fitted to the LWB. I like what this does to the gearing compared to what was on it originally, poor mans overdrive. I have kept the original rims. The downside is the slightly reduced effectiveness of the non servo assist brakes.

It came from a farm in western Qld. So, low miles and no rust anywhere.

I did the mechanical work. Very little wear, but every bit of rubber was rock hard and cracked, lines, seals, etc.

The panels were v. rough. It had dents of course, but also tears and bullet holes to be tigged up. I had someone do that for me, plus prep and paint, plus all the body rubbers (doors, windows and between body panels). They did an astoundingly good job. I was and remain amazed by the result. I can't speak highly enough of them, Retruck in Brisbane.

I did the interior, dash recover etc. I had another good tradesman do the seat recover.

I fitted the Exmoor/ Wrights Off-road sound deadening floor mat kit, and the result from that was beyond my expectations.

Yes that's basically correct - the silver headlight surrounds came later in the S3 era. Probably about the same time that the body colours went over to the standard Leyland range and the wheel rims changed from Limestone to Silver.

All of that aside, a nice paint job there.

I have about 8 series threes, the newest being a 1976 model, none have silver headlight surrounds,
they are all matched to the vehicle colour.

Googling pics of Series 3 shows a mix - some body colour, some not - some are even matt black.

Looking at pics of series 3s on the forum there is also a mix. It has been suggested that later Series 3 had silver but clearly my example does not support that.

So does anyone know what determined the colour of light surrounds on Series 3?

Hello again.

Unless you happened to buy that truck in 1972 with the silver surrounds, there’s a fair chance that they were repainted.

Again, notwithstanding that anyone can paint anything, I believe they were leaving the factory that way towards the later part of the S3 run.

My own truck - 1975 - matched the body colour as did my cousin’s truck - 1974.
