Hi all,
I went into my local auto paint shop this afternoon to get some Spanish Olive for my S3 SWB. I have the Dulon code for Spanish Olive but the shop is exclusively Debeers products. They are going to match by eye as they say the Debeers translations of the Dulon codes are often not that accurate. This is fine in this instance as I can give them an example.
My problem is that I will shortly need to have some paint mixed for a project from code, with no sample. The colour is not a manufacturer's standard paint, it is a "fleet" colour and is coming from the 1981 Dulon Fleet book (which I'll copy and post on here somewhere once I have it). Can anyone recommend a helpful paint outlet that understands the old Dulon codes?
Thanks!
Alan

If you are in the West then I can recommend Olarenshaws, they’ve been around for yonks and my mate uses their industrial coatings. PPG suppliers, but worth a call, they have decades of experience in there - Olarenshaws Paint Centre - Specialist Colour Matching and suppliers of Automotive, Domestic, Industrial and Marine Paints. Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
John, Gav,
Thanks to you both, very much appreciated. The S3 is in Bayswater, so I'll start with Milsomes! I'll let you know how I go. The Dulon book is in the mail to me. It apparently covers about 60 fleets, so hopefully will be a good resource for people wanting to find an original colour for their vehicle if they know its history.
Best,
Alan
I used a shop in Thomas town to mix to my D3 code, I think they also have one in bayswater.

Any experienced coach and motor painter tradesman should be able to colour match. Problem is finding one these days. Most would be over 50 and in the cemetery or nursing home. Any panel shop can mix to formula. Insurance companies will not pay the labour involved in colour matching but insist on "formula" for repairs even if the formula paint does not match the faded and worn paint on the vehicle under repair.

Eastern Auto Paints in Bayswater mixed some Spanish Olive for me a while back and a few years ago Autobarn put some in a pressure pack for me.
Eastern will also put it in a pressure pack and have a colour match on file they did for the light green of my Dormobile.
Part of the problem is that the paint shop either need the details of the formula or they charge for colour matching. Any good paint shop should be able to match to a sample, good panel shops do it all the time to match faded paintwork. I went into a panel shop some years back and was surprised at the paint mixing setup they had onsite.

Colin,
Thanks, Eastern Paints is just around the corner from my shed, so that is handy. I have some paint being matched to a sample panel underway, so will see how that turns out. (I'm painting the wheels and roof on the S3 as I don't like either silver or Limestone as a contrast to the Spanish Olive, so I'm going body colour all over).
I'll speak with Eastern and Milsomes and see how confident they are are of acurately translating a Dulon code into a modern paint system.
Alan
Alan,
Eastern had the Dulon codes.
Also got some Limestone from them by code rather than matching.
I think Series III had white roof & wheels with Spanish Olive. Rear side panels were Spanish Olive and just the roof panel white.
Mine needs painting, the door was done some time back with paint that came with the car.

OK, here is the colour match with a Valspar acrylicPaint1.jpgPaint2.jpg
The first is in daylight against the tub rear lights panel I gave the shop as a match. The second photo is in the shed on the front valence. Allowing for the paint coverage on the originals and the difference in gloss, pretty darn close in both cases. I had an interesting conversation with the chap that did the match. Apparently it is very difficult to get a match against Dulon that works in both sun and shade. The modern paints perform differently in sun and shade than the older variety as they lack the secret ingredient with the atomic number of 82.
