    77 88" 2 1/4 petrol

    Hi all

I acquired a 1977 88" 2 1/4 petrol some months ago. The chassis is a write off as this had been used as a beach fishing vehicle around Coffs Harbour for years before i got my hands on it. The rear is almost complete rotted away as have some outriggers further forward. Once I get another job (when things pick up) I will be after a chassis or a donor vehicle if any one has one??

Anyway the thing hadn't run for years but I manged to get it going yesterday and it appeared to idle well before I had to switch off due to smoke coming out of some of the dodgy wiring in the dash! And no exhaust may be an issue for the neighbours!

My question though is where does this spring connect to? The long one dangling in the background. I guess it is the throttle return spring but there is no obvious place to connect it. The end seems to be missing which might explain things.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

That spring did not come out of Leyland Australia (or whatever it was called at the time). It appears to be there to help the spiral spring round the bell crank in the picture - which may be broken, or perhaps it is there to help it overcome the drag of a whole set of rusty pivot points in the linkage!

I would be inclined to pull the whole linkage apart, free it up, adjust or replace the spiral spring and see if additional springing is still needed (it should not be).

    Thanks JDNSW

JRA was it then? I worked for them in 81/82.

Ok well that will explain why it doesn’t appear in any manual. Yes there is a lot of crud and rust, I gave it a good soaking in degreaser and a blast with the gernie which got some of it off.

At some point in the future I will strip and clean repair/replace all the ancillaries. The rotor arm was pretty corroded but cleaned up well enough with some wet and dry to get it started. The strap that secured the fuel tank has corroded to nothing so the tank is sitting in the back and I used an electric pump to deliver fuel from a small can directly into the carb for my test start.

It had been sitting in a paddock for years, certainly hadn’t move in the last four years from when I first saw it all overgrown with cows leaning on it!

According to Wikipedia, Leyland Australia was not replaced by JRA until 1983, so it was probably Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia in 1977.

We were certainly in Leyland House 332-342 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. The building is still there! Pretty sure all the paperwork had JRA on it but it doesn’t matter now..

Wikipedia is not always right, of course, but since writing the last I have remembered that a 1981 Series 3 I have here (remains of, anyway) has a "Leyland" badge on the side of each front mudguard just in front of the bulkhead. And I have in front of me the Warranty Registration certificate for it, dated 5/2/81 and printed with "Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia Limited". Also the "Passport to Service", and "Australian emissions control handbook", both similarly labelled.

This would seem to confirm that in 1981, it was still Leyland Australia!

    Hi Brendan

Thanks for that. Normally I would be jumping at it but just now I don’t have a job. If you are not desperate to part with it could I get back to you once I have scored a gig if you still have it?

    Hi Brendan

I sent you a pm last week, just wondering if you received it? I have had problems with them previously.

    Hi Simon,

Apologies haven't been online, the chassis isn't going anywhere at the moment.
I will get some pictures of it and send them to you.

    Regards,

    Brendan
