That spring did not come out of Leyland Australia (or whatever it was called at the time). It appears to be there to help the spiral spring round the bell crank in the picture - which may be broken, or perhaps it is there to help it overcome the drag of a whole set of rusty pivot points in the linkage!
I would be inclined to pull the whole linkage apart, free it up, adjust or replace the spiral spring and see if additional springing is still needed (it should not be).

Ok well that will explain why it doesn’t appear in any manual. Yes there is a lot of crud and rust, I gave it a good soaking in degreaser and a blast with the gernie which got some of it off.
At some point in the future I will strip and clean repair/replace all the ancillaries. The rotor arm was pretty corroded but cleaned up well enough with some wet and dry to get it started. The strap that secured the fuel tank has corroded to nothing so the tank is sitting in the back and I used an electric pump to deliver fuel from a small can directly into the carb for my test start.
It had been sitting in a paddock for years, certainly hadn’t move in the last four years from when I first saw it all overgrown with cows leaning on it!
